Did you join the group?  I'd invite you to be a Friend so you could find the group, but there are about 10 general profiles with your name.

Diana, Achilles & Xena

Glad you're doing the research.  Last year my sister took her dog in for routine exam and vaccination.  She did whatever the vet recommended.  Her dog died from the lepto and the vet hadn't given her any warning it could happen.  Apparently, the fatality isn't uncommon.

Food Discussion & Information / Re: www.dogfoodanalysis.com

I prefer this site  http://www.doberdogs.com/foodcht4.html.
It just lists the ingredients of the foods.  Doesn't rank anything.  Just gives me facts so I can make my own decision.

Hey! I was just looking at the analysis section and it referred to my trainer, Liz Palika. I've known about this site for about 10 years.  I just started working with Liz at the begining of this year. She had mentioned researching dog foods in one of her classes.  I was going to send this site to her and tell her she didn't need to do the reseach, someone else already had.  I guess she's the someone. :P

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / Re: My nemesis: the stairs
« on: May 20, 2009, 08:57:38 am »
I found some low, wide concrete stairs at a local park.  I trained Xena there a few times while she was young.  We're in a single story home, so she doesn't get much exposure, but I know she can handle them if she has to.

Make sure you share this link and story on MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter, Craigslist, ask all of your friends and relative to post it (even if they can't contribute) and anywhere else that you can think of.  The greater coverage will produce faster results.

www.fundable.c om is an online fundraising site.  I haven't used it but I've seen a couple of private parties using it on Craigslist.  The rescue that I work with has had a lot of sucess fundraising using myspace and facebook.  Even getting $1-$5 donations, it adds up quickly.

Any one heard about the EPA concerns?

http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/health/flea-tick-control.html

Another site listed the products before the EPA pulled the list off.

http://dogtravelnetwork.com/dog_travel_news/?p=456

I've read the posts about Sargent's products.  But this one is listing Frontline as well.  The thought of 2 long-haired dogs in San Diego without effective flea treatments made my breathing stop.

I've attached a solution!

Incredible!  I have trouble just getting my Pyrs to come in for meals.

"Merlin in my avatar, hates goldens. We have an obnoxious one next door, an uncut male that Mer would take out in a New York minute. It seems to spill over onto any dog with that look and we are just careful to avoid any contact with any dog that is that type. Other than that he is Mr Mellow around everyone, even mop dogs with Napoleon complexes that nip his ankles and think that his flews are chew toys."

Flews!?! LOL That's a new one.

Thanks for the pictures! Too cute!

I just decided to have an Easter biscuit hunt on Sunday in the backyard.  If I'm feeling really ambitious I will make the biscuits Saturday evening to look like eggs.  At least, I can hide store-bought biscuits under the shrubs.  I'm pet-sitting a friend's dog and a couple friends might like to come over with their dogs.

Love the video!  But having 3 Newfs must be very painful.  Don't your cheeks get sore from grinning all the time :P

Behavior, Housebreaking, Obedience / My Shy Giant

I got Achilles a few months ago from a private party.  He's four years old, tall even for a Pyr, but gangly.  He's 32" at the shoulders and  42" to  the top of his head with all feet on the floor.  He has a very deep bark that he likes to use, even at the leaves falling down.  I've noticed he can be a little shy.  When we go to meet someone, sometimes he takes a couple steps away when they try to pet him ;D.

My next-door neighbor had a friend over who wanted to meet my furkids.  We have a 4' chain link fence between our yards that we were talking over.  I gave the friend a handful of biscuits and Xena promptly went to get her treats.  But Achilles wasn't so sure.  He would take a few steps towards the friend and let out his fierce bark.  Then he came back to me and actually hid behind me! He peeked around my hips but kept his body hidden.  Then he took a few steps out and barked.  Then hid again.  He did this a couple of times, while Xena was scarfing down the biscuits.  Picture a two-legged four year old hiding behind my skirts just coming out to poke the stranger. Of course, we were laughing so hard I was crying.  I'm sure that didn't help his confidence.  ;D

Welcome to the life of a Pyr owner. I fostered for an all breed rescue, so I ended up with a lot of dog experience (about 40 dogs in 3 years). I'm actually a cat person.  That's why the only dogs I've owned have been Pyrs. They can be very independent, aloft one minute and cuddling the next.  Training them takes as much patience as training a cat.  And of course, here in Southern California, the fur is always an issue. But I can't talk myself into any other breed. I like the independence, and they are mellow and loyal.  I like my dogs the way I like my men . . . big, long-haired and floppy-eared  ;)
