I so dont believe this is right! At my local humane society they have a 10 month old merle great dane. The adoption fee is usual $75 but they charge $200 for a purebred  ??? [which they just started doing this when some one new took over] Well they have this Great Dane for adoption for $500. I am pretty sure the shelter is pocketing some of this money. Come on they go from $75 for the adoption fee, to $500 ??? I just dont get it, please some one explain this to me?

There is a "rescue" located close to us that gathers up danes from all over and charges really high adoption / ransom fees.  I KNOW it is all about profit, it's a shame for the pups.

Other side of the coin here.... Assuming they are legit, we all know the high cost of medical care for our big paws. Nuetering here for a dane can be as high as $300.00, and that is not including anything for shots, chipping or vet care for any of the medical problems associated with neglect and/or abuse.
Even if none of those are neccisary for that particular dog, the higher purebred fee may defray the cost on the next mixed rescue who deserves a chance and cannot command such a high fee.
That being said, I go on record as saying  it still sucks.

Our Humane Society started charging double the adoption fee for purebred dogs not too long ago...I mean, I think this is putting one dog as having higher value than another whcih is not supposed to be what the Humane Society is about at their very basis!...I think it sucks out loud!...I am pretty sure they can't pass the dogs papers on to you anyway...I used to love our Humane Society but I've had somewhat of a parting of the ways with them...First they fired my trainer for no good reason & the same week brought in a woman to train with some big fancy degrees & then upped the price of their training classes...I spoke to this new trainer & decided we wouldn't be seeing her...If she didn't read it in a book she was clueless!...I am now working with the small & underfunded Humane Society where we got Rosie.

According to that show 'Dealing Dogs' on HBO, which was horrifying BTW...dog shelters/pounds also sell dogs to Class B dealers who torture them and sell for medical research/cosmetics research.  All of them don't do this, but many many many do.  My dad also worked with the Humane Society in Pierce Cnty (Seattle) and he said the corruption was UNBELEIVABLE.
I am not suprised about this at all, but like Stella pointed out, it could be a wonderful organization that is trying to guard against puppymillers/bybs, or it could be much more evil...
Either way, it's sad for the purebread dogs who won't be adopted because of that high adoption fee.  Of course I don't know that I would want to put a big paw into the hands of someone who can't afford $500, these guys are like garbage disposals for MONEY.
