Update on Thomas!!
« on: February 28, 2007, 10:46:06 am »
The vet asked me to bring Thomas back in, b/c he's still doing well. They gave him a couple of days to a couple of weeks left about a week before Christmas, so it's suprising that he's even alive, let alone doing quite well.

I took him in this morning, and the vet couldn't feel the large tumor that was on one kidney. He was shocked. He was also surprised the Thomas weighed 11.25 pounds!! He's never weighed that much and was sooo skinny when he first got sick. He said that he's been a vet for over 20 years and stuff like this just doesn't happen that often. He asked if he could do an ultrasound.

He called me a little while ago with the results of the ultrasound:

Tumor 1 on kidney 1: Was over 6.5 cm in diameter and is now 3.8 cm (this was the one he was feeling for)
Tumor 2 on kidney 2: Was 4.8 cm in diameter and is now 4.0cm
Tumor 3 in his intestines: Was 4.0 cm by 3.8 cm and now they can't even see it on the ultrasound! It seems that it has disappeared!

He is doing bloodwork now to check his kidney function, I think. He said the "architecture" of his kidneys still isn't quite right. He doesn't want to get my hopes up, b/c he doesn't think we can cure the cancer. But he is going to consult with an oncologist once the bloodwork is in to see if there is another course of treatment that may work better to prolong his life (right now he's just on prednisone).

I should also mention that Thomas is still pretty active (he's always been kind of lazy), following me around the house, sleeping up in the bed with me, and eating like a champ. He doesn't appear ill, either-he's alert, his coat looks great... He looks like a healthy cat.

The vet called again. The bloodwork looks good, including his iron. He was at 19% and 24% is the cut-off for a healthy level. He's now at 26%. I'm going to pick him up at lunch, so I may have more details then.

Okay, Thomas is home, and I'm back at work. The vet wanted to talk to me. He said we'll continue with prednisone, 1x a day. If he gets worse again, he'll up it to 2x a day and add another medication that the oncologist recommended if it worsens. The oncologist said to continue what we're doing for now; she said she would have started with 2x prednisone, but she'd keep doing what we're doing now. She also was surprised by the vet's luck with this.

The vet kept stressing how happy he was about this and even said, "The last time I sat out here talking to you, you were crying, and now I'm the one crying"-he was that happy. :) One of the vet techs told me she wished he'd come in last week; apparently, they had a really rough week and could have used some good Thomas vibes.
