Dogs and dating...
« on: March 29, 2007, 03:24:49 am »
Yup, I've put myself back out there into the dating world!

There is a ton of information regarding kids and the single parent dating, but I can't find anything about how it might affect a dog.

What about when it comes to overnight dates? (eventually the subject is going to come up - LOL!)

Maybe its a silly concern, but Teddy's like one of my kids!  I don't want to get him confused or out of sorts.

Anyone have any experience with this stuff - PM me if you would rather.

Thanks!
Penny

Oh yes... I do Penny.  The joys of re-entry into the dating world!

In my experience, Ranger was initially very, very skeptical of any dude that came into the house and was immediately all over them.  He was extremely curious and was very clear about making it known that he DID NOT appreciate them touching his mama in any way, shape, or form.  He wasn't aggressive, just would make sure that he wiggled his big ol' butt in between the two of us.

I decided that, until I really liked someone and saw a longer term commitment, that I would limit their interaction with Ranger.  I didn't really want to confuse him with a revolving door of dudes that I'd only go out with once or twice.

When I met my boyfriend, and knew he was gonna be around for awhile, I gradually increased their time together. Usually we kicked off a date that would be at my house with a walk and let the bf hold the leash, so Ranger got the idea that this dude was gonna be around and that he needed to respect the bf as well.  It was important to me that the 2 of them build a relationship as well.  They have a great relationship now and he even whimpers when the bf leaves.  He still gets a wild hair sometimes when the bf hugs me, but the bf puts him in a "sit" and then praises him.

Hope this helps!
