Question about No Mate Spray
« on: April 10, 2007, 03:38:17 am »
So my baby girl Gracie is becoming a woman.  She is showing signs of her first heat cycle. My issue is we are taking a pre-novice obedience course and I the final class is next Monday so I had hoped her cycle would have held off until then as the next opening for her surgery would have been the following Tuesday.  No such luck but that's okay.  Since we take the class with other dogs and some are in tact I want to make everyone is as comfortable as possible.  My question is about No Mate Spray.  First, has anyone heard of this spray and how useful is it and second, where can I find it?  She will be wearing britches of course as that is a rule for the club when bitches come into season.  Though I thought being next Monday is Pre-Novice Graduation class I would hate to create such a distraction for the other dogs.  Any help would really be appreciated.

I've never heard of a spray for that sorta thing.  I just thought I'd bump this to the top, hopefully someone else will have some great advice for you!

OK, I just Googled No Mate Spray and didn't come up with much.  I did come upon a few Training Contracts that stated if you were to bring your dog to a training session and the dog was in heat she would have to wear "britches" (hee that word makes me giggle) and use the No Mate Spray or Pill.  It also said something about getting it at the vet clinic.  Maybe you can call your vet and talk to them about the Spray or Pill and see which one would work best.  Good Luck!

How thoughtful.  Thank you very much.  I did call the vet and they recommended me to another vet that specializes in breeding and breeding related issues.  The spray was also an unfamiliar item and the pill was something the recommended against.  Apparently it can lead to other health issues.  I would not have opted for that as I really do not like to medicate anyway unless absolutely necessary.  I am going to go ahead and use the "britches" and I have had lots of great suggestions there.  Pull-ups being one of them and if you just cut a hole in the back then you've got a great little out for the tail.  Best part is you can throw them away and not have to worry with sanitary napkins.  Nice.....  Again, thank you so much for your help.

I was a bit confused by that Pill suggestion as well.  I'm sure there are side effects with taking that.  The pull ups are a super idea, I bet they'll work great!

No kidding.  Can you imagine?  Birth control for dogs?  Geeez.  I'll just go with the spay.  I like the pull-up idea too.  I wonder if they come in pink?  :D

They do come in pink! hahahahaa But if you can't find pink ones you can always take a pink marker and draw flowers all over them!  ;D

Great.  Well this is the final class for this particular course.  It's the graduation class and honestly this club says too that the dog doesn't really have to show up for class but the handlers do.  If we were competing then for sure she would not be able to come.  So, I'll call the instructor and see if we can come with britches and see what she says.  Thanks Jo as I you saved me a lot of driving around looking for that stuff.
