suggestions for a crate
« on: April 22, 2007, 09:40:28 pm »
Ideas anyone.  We have a new Newfy pup.  We want to keep him in a crate at night.  Any suggestions for the type and size we should buy?  We don't have air conditioning, although it doesn't get that hot here, so I was thinking a wire one.
Thanks

Dog.com has some great wire crates that THEY make on sale. I just bought one and it is AWESOME!

Crates can be SO expensive, especially the size we need for big dogs so I get mine on Ebay. For my last dog I got a GoGo crate off a pet supply place there and it was awesome. I would recommend the wire, suitcase folding style ones. They just fold up in a snap, no assembling, and fold down just as easy. For these pups I couldn't find the size I needed from the same company on there so I went with a value crate, same style and everything in a size: 48"L x 30"W x 35"H. Supposed to be for pets up to 110lbs..larges t I could find so I went with that and it's plenty big. It's a very nice crate, works perfect for them. Except I need to get another because they are finally outgrowing sharing one. Anyway I got that last one for like $76 including shipping, which is a steal compared to most places so I was happy.

Oh and I forgot to mention, it did come with the tray and also a divider. Since it will take him awhile to fill out a crate of that size, you may want to use one. If the crate is too large, they have a tendency to potty on one side and sleep on the other, so smaller is better and then take out or move the divider as he grows. Because I have 2 in there, I never needed to use it but it comes in handy.

if you're concerned about the temperature, you could get him a crate fan and/or canine cooler mat

I took the crate to the next level and just put a 6' X '10 run in my basement.  I built a 6' X 4" riser and insulated it (the bed goes here) and put interlocking rubber mats on the floor where the riser does not extend.  I then covered it all in indoor/outdoor carpeting.  I have it situated by two window well windows so it gets sun most of the day.  I have a Dane, Mastiff and Bassette Hound and they all love it.  The only one that needs it is my mastiff puppy but they all like to "chill" in it.

I highly recommend getting the 54" crate. That way you don't have to worry about your pup outgrowing the crate thus you having to buy a new one. Here's a link to one sold at petsmart http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441809365&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302035804&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1177301562520&itemNo=4&In=Dog&N=2035804&Ne=2  I actually got mine online for what I thought was a good deal and this petsmart price TRUMPS it big time. It also includes the crate pan which if sold separately at certain stores alond can cost $79-ish. It looks a little different than mine, mine was made by midwest but I think petsmart sells that brand too. The downsides, it's HUGE but you have HUGE to be dog. Also the drop pin way it's put together definitely more of a pain to take apart and put together. BUT I still love ours, Gweck fit in it very comfortably and now he is crate free but I think he misses it cause he lays on a chair that is where is crate used to be all the time. Awwwwww! Good luck!

whoa that's a big crate. :o
