Bubba alerted me that my bird was dying!?
« on: January 03, 2008, 04:26:01 pm »
I think I posted here before that my 17 year old Lovebird Sixx had a stroke. My avian vet said there was nothing that could be done for him. Since he didn't seem to be suffering I opted to see if he would recover and he did with the exception of head tilt. He was eating/drinking and learned to compensate balance wise. So I thought we were in the clear.

Anyway fastforward to yesterday.. I opened the rec-room door and Bubba ran straight to the Lovebird cage. My first thought was 'What the heck', since Bubba never pays any attention to the birds whatsoever. So I peek in the cage to see Sixx lying on the cage bottom, bleeding from his wing. :o His cagemate another Lovebird, 16 year old Peaches was ripping his feathers out and chewing on him. OMG I thought he was dead and I freaked. :'(

I immediately removed him from the cage and checked him over. He was very weak but still alive. What shocked me is that he had a large tumor on his wing! What the heck! I KNOW it wasn't there yesterday. It seems as though Peaches was trying to 'remove' it and as a result Sixx bled to death shortly there after. :'( I managed to stop the bleeding with flour but not soon enough. :'( Sixx was my first bird, he's been with me since I was 14 years old. :'(

After the panick/shock and grief of the whole situation I realized that Bubba had alerted me to what was happening. As soon as I opened the door he ran directly to the cage. Lola didn't react at all.. just Bubba. I know they say animals can sense death.. I don't know what to think.. I'm just shocked. ???

They are very smart dogs.Last right before Nicky my Quaker died Butt spent alot of time sniffing his cage, not until after did I realize he must have known.I'm so sorry you lost your little lovie.

Lend to You a Bird

"I will lend to you for awhile, a bird" God said.
For you to love him while he lives and to mourn for him when he is dead.
Maybe for twelve of fourteen years, or maybe two or three.
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief,
You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.
I can not promise that he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this bird to learn.
I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folks that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take my lovely bird again.
I fancied that I heard them say,
For all the joys this bird will bring, the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness?
Will you love him while you may?
And for the happiness you'll know, forever grateful stay?
But should I call him back much sooner than you've planned,
Please brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed, my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him you've loved, be thankful, do not grieve.
Cherish every moment of your feathered charge.
He filled your home with songs of joy, the time he was alive.
Let not his passing take from you those memories to enjoy.
"I will lend to you, a Bird" God said, and teach you all you have to do.
And when I call him back to heaven, you will know he loved you too.

Oh Lyn! That's so sad about Sixx but isn't it cool that you have such an aware pooch? Yay for Bubba for being such a good boy.

Thanks all. :)

So far 2008 has been not so great. First Sixx.. now my 11 almost 12 year old kitty has been diagnosed with kidney failure.  :'( I got him when my son was just a baby himself. So far he's doing ok though, it's being managed with diet but I know that someday I'm going to have to make that decision. :'(

Thanks everyone. ;)

2007 kinda sucked too, I swear my luck is just horrible. From November 2007 to now I've had enough stress to last me a lifetime. :( But I'll get through it.. I always do.

The worry started christmas eve with my son in the ER with a temperature of 104.3F and then a fight with 2 of hubby's sisters, the #$%#$es. Yeah they just have to start on christmas eve. ::) Then Lola's vet visit on the 27th, don't worry she's fine. It's just really upsetting to discuss at the moment and I've beat myself up enough over it.

I've learned a valuable lesson along the way though and I won't be repeating any of this crap again. ;)

Sorry I didn't want to turn this into a vent post but I think I just did. LOL I'm seriously due for some GOOD things to happen. :D Either that or I need to stock up on Advil. ;)

Sorry to hear about your birdie, losing a pet is traumatic.
Maybe what you need is a good stiff drink!!!!!  Or a good drunk, forget all and then feel like $$$%#@#% the next day!
Maybe not.....it sounded good though.
