Baby bird pics- and ?s for bird people here
« on: April 19, 2008, 12:11:11 am »
Here are some new baby apple and cherry pics for you :) Apple is two weeks old and cherry is 10 days old.

Question for all of you bird people who have seen babies this age before (Ahem Michelle!!!)

Does Apple's feather development look normal? He has parts on his head and wings and back that are very shiny with no down or pins at all. I am so paranoid about PBFD.

AWwww look how big they are getting.
When we got our babies from the breeder they had all their feathers and were still spoon feeding. So I missed that developmental stage for them. Sorry ,I can't help. :-\
Hopefully some of the other bird people will have an answer.

Were the parents tested for PBFD?
Lordie, it's been a long time since I've seen newbies I'm trying to remember.  I know the back and head can take longer than the wing pins to come in.  And I've never seen a bird with PBFD so I'm not sure how the symptoms start with that.

He looks like a little ball of fluff.

All my birds were tested negative for PBFD when I got them...

However I just found out that two months ago they were ALL (including my macaws) exposed to PBFD when a rescue bird we had here tested false negative for PBFD then died two months later from PBFD (tested positive)

So now I am anxiously awaiting test results from some of my birds, but I have not done the new parents yet because I didn't want to stress them out by catching them and drawing blood yet.

They are two weeks (apple) and ten days old (cherry), neither have loose stools all are firm, they are very active, vocal, and are motering around the nesting box, they aren't thin at all, in fact Apple is round as an...well... apple.

They were all exposed at some point or another- I have one building for the lovebirds and the macaws are in the house, but when Mango and Kiwi laid their eggs I moved them into the house which brought any exposure to the PBFD virus inside with them. The rescue bird was outside with the other lovebirds. It had come in with very bad feathering, I tested for PBFD and it was negative. It was adopted, then died of PBFD two months later- right before it died it was tested for PBFD and came back positive. It was very sick, no feathers at all, neurological symptoms, couldn't perch etc. I was told by the vet that lovebirds are notorious for hiding PBFD for years sometimes, carrying it and spreading it but showing no syptoms and sometimes even testing negative for it, then wham it comes out. Apparently thats what happened here, but in the meantime it exposed all my birds to it for the month or so the rescue bird was here  :'( I've been worried sick ever since, but we've gone through all the cleaning and quarentening we can do ... just waiting on test results.

I know that you are still gonna worry about your crew but the feathering looks perfectly normal on Apple so far as I can tell from the pics.  Both chicks look great.  Keeping all fingers crossed that everyone comes out with a clean bill of health.

It is very hard to tell from the pics, when I blow them up they look blurry. When I first noticed it on the lovies I had it was when the feathers started coming out of the pins.If you want to email me the pics maybe they will come up clearer, and I might be able to find a love bird breeder to send them too.Sending big hugs!!!!!
