1) get a dog other than a husky

(just kidding)

My dogs learn early that open doors and gates can and will shut rapidly with little or no warning.

Try this. You must do it EXACTLY as I describe.

Set your dog up to dash towards the door.
Immediately SLAM the door as loudly as you can with no damage. Be careful not to catch any of the dog's or your parts in the door.

Immediately following the door SLAM (it needs to be loud) walk briskly to the center of the room, fold your arms, and ignore the dog for one solid minute. You need to time it. No looking at the dog, no talking to the dog, no attention to the dog. Look at the ceiling if you just. Don't move. Be quiet. For ONE MINUTE.

Go back to the door and try to induce the dog to come near it. (many won't, but try anyway). Repeat the slam, walk away, and one minute stand. VERY IMPORTANT to ignore the dog, and not look at him.

I cannot explain to you how this works, or why it does, but it does.

Once you have the dog where it is not dashing for the door, teach the WAIT command. I teach this when I am crate training puppies, using the crate door.

I tell the pup to wait, and start to open the door. If they start out before I say ok, I slam the crate door. They usually only run into it once or twice before they learn that they are not to get up to come out until you say OK.

You can also teach this with a gate.

BE CAREFUL with a door dashing Sibe. They love to run, and may bolt and run for miles if they escape.

That sounds good Red!...Pippin was taught not to go out an open gate which he still abides by & before he got here he would never go in a door before his person...I messed up & let him run in ahead of me & quickly got a handle on it by body blocking him & telling him "wait" until I went in...He's back on track now...Samson is just a gentleman I guess...He always wait for me to go ahead of him...Not sure if I taught him this or not...lol!...Good luck with your Husky Klondike! :)

 8)  Red, I always love you advice!  It's amazing.  Tried it w/my bad girl today.  She's been in a LOT of trouble and it's been a very BUSY day with her running out open doors AND the biting me in the face, growling, etc. over her food.  Sheesh.... what to do, what to do.... ???
