Uh, I'm a little bit overwhelmed and need some help...
« on: October 29, 2005, 09:28:23 am »
We're meeting a 6-month old saint bernard puppy next Saturday and will probably adopt him.  I'm picking up a used, giant-sized Vari-Kennel this week, so that's taken care of.  Now, as far as *all* of the other things we're going to need, does anyone have a recommendation for an online dog supply where I'm not going to pay outrageous shipping prices?  We live in Chicago and don't have a car, so getting everything home on the bus or train would be a huge PITA, especially with a baby in tow.  Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!   ???    :o

Well, I really like the company PetEdge, b/c they actually give you wholesale prices, unlike other wholesale places that just say they do.  But the shipping does go by weight.  However if you place an order of over $275, they will pay 1/2 the shipping.

Otherwise J-B Wholesale has a pretty average shipping rate.  So if you are looking to get some weighty items, I would go with them.

Hmmm, the "weightiest" thing would be a dog bed I think...

I'll look up both of those places...thank s!

Petsmart has a 'free shipping shop'. It doesn't have much (like 20 items), but it's worth checking out (one of the items is a dog bed)http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_list.jsp?ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032112&bmUID=1130636842604

Also, until the 31st, petco is having a special. Free shipping on supply purchases (no food) of over $50. Here are the offer details http://www.petco.com/help/promo.aspx?orderpromocode=sm10y5&MessageID=100376

Besides the kennel and crate, most of the items you will need are small enough to be carried in shopping bags on the bus or whatever... But when you get him, you will be needing 40 bags of dog food every few weeks, so I suggest you look around for food options. I know that someone said earlier that they got canidae (great food) for free shipping online...

RIP former BPO

Fabulous idea, Tina!  And darn, I was just at a thrift store today, but it was filled with throngs of costume-hunters.  I'll have to check it out again sometime this week...thanks!

And you can see his picture at Petfinder.com by looking up the name "Crede".  That's (hopefully) our new boy!
