I wonder how they know.....
« on: January 08, 2006, 12:09:42 am »
Today (Sunday) was not a good day.   I had the worst seizure yet.
During the "hectic time"of getting me into the house my husband had the kids gate the dogs. The dogs were freaking out.  My husband put me in the guest room (there was no way I could make it upstairs) and I remember pleading, "Please let the dogs in."
He actually gave in to my request before calling the ER.  Good thing I got his priorities straight.  ;) (It only involved unlatching the baby gate as he walked to the phone)

Jack (my oldest) immediately crawled in bed right next to me.  He's like butter.  He molds right to me....head next to my shoulder...nev er taking those chocolate eyes off of me and laying perfectly still.
Jilly kept watch from the foot of the bed...also perfectly still.
Daisy......wel l.....Daisy hasn't quite got the hang of it yet.  I sort of remember 111 lbs of Daisy sitting across my legs and my husband pulling her off.  She really is still at an age where she needs me more than she needs to watch over me.

Jack really is my hero.  He always knows when I'm ill.
I don't know how he knows but he does.
He was howling at the door before my husband brought me in from the car today.
He just always knows when something is wrong with me.
I don't know how many times....from the flu...to a bad day...to this recent health issue ....that Jack's fur has soaked up my tears.    He's always there.
Aren't dogs the best?
Aw....who am I kidding?   I'm preaching to the choir.  :)

I hope you are feeling better now. Jack is such a good boy for looking after his mommy. I have read studies that show that dogs can tell when someone is going to have a seizure. It's so amazing how dogs are so in tuned to us!

I am so glad that you have Jack to help comfort you.  It really is amazing how much dogs are in tune with their people!  I know Dazy is the same way with me, but with her being a puppy, she's still at that age where she's unsure what to do on the bad days.  lol  But it's certainly obvious that she knows something's not right.  I just love dogs!

YEAH Dazy!!!!  She will just get better and better as she gets older.  What a sweetie!

Jack really is such a good boy but he doesn't know before I have a seizure.  He's not one of those special dogs. Too bad....he would look so cute in that  little vest.   :)  Probably just as well....Jilly pulls any and all clothes off of Jack.  She just doesn't like it. Not even a bandana.  Go figure.

Jack just  knows when I don't feel well while it's happening.
Whether it's physically or emotionally.
Maybe it's because I saved him from a shelter that now he saves me all the time.

You guys must have dogs that snuggle in close......dog s know that you need extra comfort.   The kind of dogs that put their toys aside for an evening (ok...maybe just an hour) and cuddle you.

Tell me about 'em.

Way to go Jack.  What a good boy.

I wonder if the dogs can tell you before you have a seizure.  I understand they can.

Jack gets extra hugs from me today.

Tina

Tina, that's what Nee does with me.  Well they're not TECHNICALLY seizures as much as a cardiac mal function.  But he knows I'm gonna black out and he pushes me to a chair so I can sit and he won't let me up till it's over.  And if I DON'T go to the chair, and I fall he helps me back up.  He did all of this WITHOUT any training.  I think it's awesome!

How lucky are we that we have dogs in our lives?!!  Whether it's as sophisticated as Nee knowing to push Anky in to a chair and keep her there or, like Jack just be so aware of your emotional or physical well-being and knowing what to do, or as simple as Cowboy always being next to me (couldn't I please go to the toilet alone???) they know.  I guess that's why I get SO wound up when someone mistreats a dog!  It just breaks by heart that all that sensitivity is being abused.

Hmmmm.  That ended like a rant, and I really didn't mean to go there....

When my male great dane Tonka was still with us he was 6 months or so when I rescued my female great dane. I had the best relationship with Tonka and there isn't a relationship that could ever compare to the one Tonka and I had. But when Brody came along she wasn't really bonded to anyone, she was a very independent dog. But when Tonka got very sick and I didn't bring him home from the vet and cried for days Brody was there for me. She still thinks shes a tiny lap dog but she cuddles up in my rocking chair with me and i rock her like i did when she was a baby. And ever since Tonka has been gone Brody has definately bonded to me, and I have a really good relationship with her now. It was like she sensed me hurting from the loss of Tonka that she felt she needed to fill his gap. Now she nows when I'm having a bad and seems to just want to cuddle. She still will climb up on my lap when I'm sitting in my rocking chair and I still rock with her. Its amazing how our dogs really know how we're feeling. And how we are feeling effects their moods
