Fencing advice from people with a lot of land?
« on: April 06, 2006, 12:24:21 pm »
Hi,

We are moving to the sticks!!!  Yay!  We will have 25 acres on the ocean with fields and woods.  The dogs are sooo excited (ok, maybe that's me)!
I know a lot of you have a lot of land and I'd like to know what you use for fencing.  I would like to enclose as much as possible but I don't want to break the bank.  Also, there are a lot of wild animals on the island as well as a viscious Pit mix that often gets loose and has attacked some people and dogs so I need a really sturdy fence.  Any ideas?  Thanks.
Here of some pix of the new yard and Binky almost grown up!

Inexpensive, but keeps things in/out pretty well - American wire.  Better, but more expensive, cattle panels which are steel rods welded together about 52" high, 16' long.  We use both here.  The LGD fencing is all cattle panels.  The fence around the house is cattle panels along the road for greater security where dogs like to jump up on it to pretend to kill passersby, American wire around the back and sides.  High tensile wire for the cows but you didn't ask about cows  ;)  I wouldn't recommend that for keeping dogs in or out.

Thank you-I'll have to look into that.  As for cows...maybe later!  Definitely getting a couple goats though!

THank you- I love it there.  We are moving to Westport Island, Maine. The farmhouse was built in 1870 and has been in my family since the early 1900's as a vacation house. My husband and I have quite a project on our hands as we are undertaking the renovations ourselves and will also have a commute of an hour to our business in Portland (where we live now), but it will be worth it!  I keep thinking of all the animals I can have and no neighbors to complain!  Yay.

The most important thing you need is all of your BPO pals to put the fence up ;) only we don't leave after the fence is done.

I don't have any fencing advice. I just want to say that the land looks wonderful! Binky will love having all that room to run. Kiah is very jealous! Just look at Binky all grown up! She sure is pretty!

Yes, a fence raising party-sounds like a plan!  Maybe we could have a BPO get together up there once we get settled!

Lovely spot your moving to! I love the coast of Maine. I have been looking into fencing options as well for a large parcel of land and had come across this website. I do not have experience with the product but thought it looked interesting. Fencing in the entire property would still be very expensive, but if only doing a certain portion may be a suitable product.

Good Luck on your move.

There are several options all of which are basically livestock fencing. If you want to fence as much as possible the most efficiently you want to use the round posts that can be driven with a woven fence. I personally like www.redbrand.com for fencing large areas nothing is better than their Keepsafe Fence for horses(this is a very expensive product). If you splurge on the the fence fabric and the terminal posts you can go cheaper on the line posts and simplify the installation and still have a great fence.
PM me if you would like more details as I have a bit of experience with fencing and am getting ready to fence our yard for Kali.   Tim

Thanks for the websites.  I will check them out.  We're still not sure how much we're going to fence to start but at least I can get an idea of the cost.

I meant to ad get woven not welded fence as the only welded fence that is going to hold up is the cattle panels mentioned above. Welded will also be very labor intensive to fence any large area especially with terrain such as what is common in New England. The cattle panels can make a great economical kennel run if your creative with their installation. Every thing has its applications. Alos I am sure if you wanted help there are a few of us in New England that are always looking for a dog friendly vacation.  Tim

We live on the coast of Maine where fencing does not hold up well because of frost heaves.  We installed 900 feet of the Friendly Fence and are very pleased with it.  We installed the fence before we got our puppy so she knows her space and we do not leave her outside when we are not home.  We followed the directions and used the taller fence and heavy duty posts when needed between trees.  It was quite a project however nothing compared to some other types of fencing.  Depending on your situation it may be an option for you.
