I Feel Fantasticaroo!!!
« on: June 02, 2006, 05:34:19 pm »
I have been in a huge slump lately and the only thing that makes me feel better is excersise.  The problem, as anyone who has depression knows is that it's really hard to get up and move when you are in a major slump.
Well, it was gorgeous out today and I went running. I feel WONDERFUL!  YAY, I feel alive for the first time in a while.  I mean, I get happy about PUPPY, but that isn't this deep down happy contented alive feeling.  I feel awake and alert!
 :D
Badger loves when I excersise cause then I come home and torment him!

I know what you mean.  When I begin to get into shape, or even just go for a nice really long walk, I feel great!  So, why don't I do it more often?  Lazy, busy, etc, etc,.  You would think that we would all make more time to do those things that will make us feel good.

I have thought it was 'laziness' too, but I don't really think that makes a lot of sense.  We aren't too lazy to do other things that make us feel good.  I think it's that you need the endorphines you get from the exercise in order to feel better, and at least for me, I have severe depression without regular exercise, so it's hugely difficult to do the exercise when you first start out because you haven't gotten the 'lift' from it yet.
I think it's a chemical thing, it's so hard to get that huge ball rolling.
I know that even at the busiest times in my life, I have always had time to exercise, it only takes a few minutes over a lunch hour.  It is just so darn hard!

I KNOW you are right!  With severe depression, everything just takes too much effort and physical exercise is the very best thing you can do for yourself.  Do you need me to bug you regularly???  I do it for my daughter on a regular basis!! I'm happy to add you to the list!! ;)

YES bug me!  I'm as bad (or worse) as the next person.
I used to be a mental health therapist and I had this client who was terribly depressed.  I referred him for meds, nothing helped.  Finally, after months of therapy (and I was a really good shrinker if I do say so myself) and him sitting there, making NO improvement, I convinced him to work out for 30 days.  He got better.  None of the staff could believe it.  I really wanted to take credit, but it wasn't me...it was those wonderful chemicals in his body!
YAY CHEMICALS!!
