First time camping with my pup - help me get prepared!
« on: June 15, 2006, 07:07:06 am »
We have rented a trailer in July for a week of Holidays ...and dogs are allowed!!  I'm pretty excited - it should be a lot of fun!

How can I best prepare Teddy for a week of new surroundings, patterns, and sleeping arrangements?

(I'm calling today to find out if he can actually come into the trailer - I didn't think of that before today!  Eeek!)

He doesn't have accidents in the house anymore while we are home.  He currently sleeps in a room downstairs where he occasionally goes on the floor (which was acceptable when he was little - poor training on my part).  We don't let him sleep upstairs or loose because he's a puppy - he chews everything!

Any and all suggestions are welcome!!  Thanks!!!

How exciting for Teddy, his 1st camping trip! ;D

As long as Teddy's up-to-date on shots, I don't think there's too much more preparation you can do.  If he's anything like Kate camping, he'll be so tired at night time from a full day of fresh air, walks and swims I'm guessing he'll sleep thru the night with no interruptions! :)

We aren't at the point yet that we "completely" trust Kate off a lead camping (while we're just sitting around the site).  We usually hold on to her leash, but when we need a break - we tie a line between two trees, and then hook her 8 ft leash onto that.  Works great for us ;)

Wish you the best of luck, I'm sure Teddy will have a BLAST, and we better see lots of pictures after the trip!!! ;D

I love camping with the crew!
I always make sure they are well protected from fleas and ticks (normally not an issue in my suburbs), and I also bring plenty of drinking water for mine from home. Merlin has a tendency to have blow-outs from drinking well or unfamilar water. We have stakes and 30 foot tie-outs to keep them on site. I bring a dog blanket for each of them, and lay them out on the ground so they have a place to go that they know is theirs.
PM me if you have any questions, and most of all...Have a GREAT time!

Great suggestions - THANKS!!!  Keep 'em comin'!!

I just got off the phone with the camp owner (My Hubby's aunt) and she is setting us up with a trailer we can take the dog into!  Yay!!

Crazier news yet - they just got a Saint puppy!!!  He is 3 weeks younger than Teddy and they have built a 30'x20' dog run that we can use all week!  Teddy will have a big paw playmate for the entire week!!!  Now I'm really excited!!

Hi,

Winslow loves camping  ;D Definatly bring an extra leash and collar. I had a 20ft lead that i used to wrap around a tree so I could set up the camper. Well Winslow chewed through the lead in like 3 minutes and came and sat at the camper door. Silly boy doesn't like to be away from Dad.

By the time I finished my First adult beverage every kid in the campground came by to see the BIG DOG. I even had kids fighting to take him for walks!!  :D Wait and see your Pup will be the ambassador of the camp.

Oh plenty of poop bags will come in handy too.  ::) One more thing that i forgot bring a copy of Teddy's shot record and license info. Some campgrounds require them before they will let the dog stay, it is basically a security policy for the camp in case of a bite or accident with Teddy.
