As for the crate thing.  I too thought it was cruel.  However, left open, Kuma chose to go in.  That opened my eyes, and I started my research.
People need to read the history of a dogs life.  The Wild dogs.  They all live in Dens.  And now as I think back, I noticed that dogs like to stay under tables. Tables give them a sense of 'den' feeling.  Protected for the sky is falling :D ;) ... hee hee... had to throw that in.

I had to learn about crates from my vet!  When Baby, my mini schnauzer was getting older and her mind was going, the vet suggested using a crate.  He explained all of the benefits, especially how dogs were originally den animals, and how it may help calm Baby down.  It did wonders, until her mind continued to go....
Well, anyway, I bought a crate for Bella before I even went to pick her up as a puppy.  Wouldn't have it any other way! :)

I know & still some people think it is cruel to crate their dog...Just last night, on one of my Great Pyr groups, someone posted asking about crate size for their Pyr...One person answered suggesting they just gate off a laundry room or bathroom because "then the dog could still be a member of the family"????? ::) I failed to see the correlation of a dog being a member of your family & using the crate. :-\ >:(

We had friends over last night and they were saying how they felt so sorry for Dell because we have him crated when company comes over.  Shoot, last night he wasn't even in his crate.  He was outside and the back door was open but we blocked his entry with the X-pen that we opened up and used like a fence.  They just kept going on and on about "Poor Delly" and how he should be a part of the pack. (I kept him out because when he gets excited he pees all over the place and I don't want to have to steam clean my carpets because of "Happy-Happy-Joy-Joy" pee.)

Dell loves his crate and when he's running the house he will often go hang out in there.

I know you all are fervent Crate supporters and it works for you, but we have no need for a crate for Drake and he seems just fine.  It worked well for him when he was a pup and we were house breaking him, but now that he's an adult, there's just no need.  PLus at night, I want him loose in case something goes down.  I guess what I'm saying is that it works both ways.  What may seem like people not understanding is that they just prefer their dog to be by their sides rather than in their own little place.  Drake likes laying on the tile by the front door or on his dog bed in front of a fan or out on the deck in the cool night air.  Mostly, he just wants to be with us.  I don't see why we would need a crate.  He doesn't jump on people or pester our house guests so why would we need a crate?  See my avatar?  That's Drake's tempermant most of the time, so chill.  Not that I'm trying to say that Drake better than anybody elses dog, it's just that some people are Craters while others prefer their dogs to sleep or lay wherever they want.  To-may-to/To-mah-to, Po-tay-to/Po-tah-to, Chocolate/Vanilla, it's just one of those kinds of things.  Nobody could ever talk me into crating Drake, it's just not our thing.  Maybe if we ever have multiple dogs or an out of control dog, but even then....  Mmmmmm, I don't think so.  But Kudos to y'all if it works for you.  Every dog experience is different.

Boy, if Dell was as calm and cool as Drake, we wouldn't need to crate him when company is over.  That would be great!

Delly is just a volatile mix of energetic shepherd and spazzy lab (not all are spazzy but his genetics apparently are!) and his absolute and utter glee at seeing new people, who arrive in nice, hair-free and drool-free clothes is over the top. We have worked and worked on the spastic-ness but just can't seem to break it yet (a la "Marley and Me).  He's also young, only 18 months, so I'm sure in time he will mellow greatly.

I would also like to leave Dell loose at night but there is just too much trouble for him to get into unsupervised.

I started this thread because I caught a cute pic of my sister's dog, Honey trying to find room in ther crate with Sam...I don't use a crate for either one of my dogs anymore...I actually use it for our house bunnies so they can go out in the yard for fresh air & sunshine...I do bring it in occasionally when we have doggy company who requires it's use but Sammy knocks himself out trying to get in it...He loves it!...So, I am just going to get the bunnies a new crate or run for the yard & the crate in the dogs room so Sam can use it at will...We don't ever shut the door on it.
But, I do agree that all dogs are different...& what works for one may not work for another. :)

You're right, fair enough, this thread morphed into something else I guess.  I saw several people talking about some of the ignorant non-crating folks who don't understand crating and I just wanted to pipe in about our experience not using crates and why it works for us, that's all.  Cute pics by the way, dogs do the funniest things.

That's  o.k :)...I don't think there is a thing at all wrong with not crating your dog!...I prefer not to use the crate with my guys actually...I never have issue with crating or not crating...It's just when people that don't crate think it is cruel of those who choose to crate their dogs...Now that irritates me!

It's perfectly o.k....I just didn't want anyone to think that anyone else was questioning or judging their desision to crate or not to crate. :)
