new dog
« on: November 15, 2006, 01:15:16 pm »
I'm new to this message board.  We are getting a year old male (altered) Malamute/shepard mix tomorrow from the local pound.  Don't have any history of him.  Doesn't seem to have a lot of training.  Does sit, but doesn't stay and is a dragger on a leash.  Seems to be very loveable.
We just had over an acre fenced with an invisable fence.  He will start his training on it next week..  Has any else use this and what luck are you having with it.
Have had dogs for 40 years and haven't had any problems training them,  shepards, danes and Brittany spanials.  After reading on the malamute I hope I'm up to training one.  Right now he will be the only dog in the house.  I live in Northern NY state, so we have a varity of weather.
Any suggestions on training, you make me afraid to leave him alone.
Also have a g grand daughter 19 mo old.  She is use to large dogs, any suggestions on how to introduce the dog to her?
I'll welcome any help.  He seems to be a big over engeric baby, loves to kiss and seems to love to be hugged.  We have visited him a few times at the pound in an kennel area, where he could run free in a fenced area.  Seemed to take to us and did come when we called him.
Thanks for any help

How wonderful that you are giving this guy a forever home!  That's great news!!

On the invisible fence, be careful.  We had a female Newf that knew if she ran fast enough she'd be through before she could get zapped....and then wouldn't come back home.  We gave up on the whole system with our last pup, Chester and have regular fencing plus the dog fencing to keep him on the property.  I would suggest walking him on a lead for the first few months until he's reliable...and include obedience classes as soon as possible.

With your granddaughter, I'd watch him like a hawk whenever he's around her until you're absolutely, positively, convinced that there won't be a problem...mont hs, if necessary.

He sounds like a gem...please post pictures as soon as you can....and welcome to BPO!!

Does the invisible fence company offer any training/gaurantee?  I only ask because a friend of mine just had a house built and they put in an invisible fence and the company that did it offered training that was gauranteed.  Rather than having only the one zap point they have three.

Congrats and good luck with the new pup!!
