I'm new, need advice, support re: my Aussie w/hemangiosarcoma
« on: January 31, 2007, 09:20:09 am »
Hi, I'm new. Unfortunately, my dog's recent diagnosis (yesterday!) of hemangiosarcom a brings me here looking for support and any info I can find. My sweet blue merle Aussie, named Boomer, was acting very lethargic on 1-13-07. Took him to the vet and came home w/prednisone. He got better.

On 1-22-07, he was staggering to get up. I took him to the ER vet where they saw a tumor on his spleen; and ultrasound the next day confirmed it. He had surgery 1-23 and thankfully there was no visible sign of mets. Yesterday I get the path report confirming that the tumor was malignant. So, here I am. He is to see the doggie oncologist tomorrow. I'm at a loss of what to do...a speciual diet? Chemo? The ER vet said with aggressive therapy, he'd have 8 mos to live.

Just looking for any ideas or happy stories...I understand the surgery wasn't curative, but hopefully he'll beat the odds and be around a couple years.

Thanks for reading. He's my best friend and I am heart-broken. Hug your Aussies for me.

I am so sorry that you and your pup have to go thru this.  How old is your dog?  I sadly don't have any optimistic stories to pass on to you.  If I read your post correctly if the dog DOES have aggressive chemo he will have 8 months?
What is the quality of those 8 months?

I am so sure you adore this dog but I'm also sure that you realize it isn't fair to put him thru pain and suffering so you can get an extra few months with him.  (Of course this is just my opinion, certainly can be wrong, and if I were in your shoes I probably would do it to have the extra few months - so while I know one thing I would probably do the other)

Of course, there are such things as miracles. I will be hoping for one for you and your baby.

I'm so sorry to hear about Boomer.  I haven't gone through this, so I can't offer any advice, but I can offer support and LOTs of good juju in hoping that Boomer will come out of this ahead!  I agree with aggghgmom, there is a line between quantity and quality of life that I would consider when you make you tough decision.  Maybe Chemo would be worth it until you no longer feel it is allowing Boomer to be Boomer.  I too, would want to hang on to Boomer as long as I could; whatever you do, best of luck and I'm sorry.  Lots of hugs and well wishes,

Boomie is 8...unfortunat ely the vet did say 8 mos w/aggressive treatment.  This is so awful and I am so heartbroken.  Thank you all for your kind words.

He eats like a pig still, seems like his normal self.  It's all just hard to believe.

Oh, gosh, a couple months.  But I figure, we've come this far, and there were no mets visible, so who knows!

But then, I hear the stories of dogs beating the odds, even without chemo, just with special diets.

So, I'll try the chemo, I was assured dogs don't react like people do since it's a lower dose and dog GI tracts are tougher.  Plus, he probably won't lose his hair.

I know if I don't try, I will regret it.  If he reacts badly to it, I will stop, but there's one way to find out :(

Boomie had his first chemo today after the oncologist consult.  He assured me that the majority of dogs suffer no ill effects. So far, Boomer has eaten like a pig and now he's napping. So, we may not beat this thing, but I hope to have him around a lot longer than 8 mos!

I am so sorry to hear about Boomer. Last November 5, Cody, my 11 year old golden retriever was diagnosed with hermangiosarco ma in the heart, spleen, with some nodules on the liver. The vet gave him a week at most to live.

Needless to say, we were heartbroken. We almost put him down at the vet, but he begged for a biscuit so we decided to give him one last meal. Despite recommendation s from people to give him whatever he wanted, I immediately got him on a cancer diet -- essentially high fat diet, with quality protein, some broccoli and no carbs (cancer feeds on sugar and carbs). No more dog food and no more biscuits. There was still a glimmer of hope in my eyes. I hit the internet and put together a pretty comprehensive plan consisting of a combination of Western and Eastern approaches.

Each day has been a blessing and to everyone's surprise he is still going strong three months later all without chemo or surgery.

A couple of highlights include a new anti-angiogenic protocol used by cutting edge vets (Cyclophosphami de, low dosage of chemo and Actos, typically used for diabetics). It is experimental and many oncologists have not even heard of it so you will have to call around. I spent a couple of days calling vets to see who was up to speed on the latest. Do a good search and you should pull up some good information. I also started him on acupuncture, herbs (both Western and Chinese) and all organic food. I am a true believer that animals (and people) can heal if given the right tools (e.g. a healthy environment). Cody is proving this each day that he lives. I do believe that Western medicine can help at times, but can also do more harm than good if too much of it is used.

I have a huge list of things he is on I can send to you offline. Please email and I will send to you. It is a little overwhelming, but my vet said something is working as he is still alive and blood tests (done a few weeks ago) are good (she said Cody appears to have puppy blood) -- again all without chemo or surgery.

Way to go Aimee Q....what you have outlined is the only thing that I have seen truly help, while maintaining quality of life, against cancer.  Eastern medicine has leaps and bounds over western medicine - especially when it comes to cancer.

I just want to add that chemo is chemo and every living species suffers ill effects from it.  Dogs appear to do better on the outside since they do not suffer hair loss and the outward symptoms, but it still causes nausea no matter what type of living being you inject chemicals into.

So Boomiepants:  you have started it and if your boy truly does ok - maintains his energy level, his appetite and still wants to play....ok.  But just watch him carefully and be willing to see the very subtle signs of ill effects if they arise (many don't because they don't want to see it).  Your key priority is maintaining his strength and energy to fight this.....

Good luck!
