Weight? * added pic *

I've mentioned before about being a little concerned about Yiska's growth and still am. What bones should be easy to feel? I know to look for a thin layer of fat over the ribs is good. When I first got her she had no fat over her ribs, her spine was right there, her hips. I took her to the vet within 3 days and she was only 11 lbs at 8 wks. They said she was a little on the thin side, but she was also exhibiting some signs of an infection, possibly uti and they said perhaps that was why. Yukon felt a lot more solid though he was only 5 lbs more than her and has stayed just 5 lbs ahead. She put on 7 lbs in the first 3 wks and gained that light layer over her ribs. But she still feels terribly bony.

I've never had a skinny dog or a a breed as large as these guys so I'm not sure if I should be able to feel their spine and hips much more easily or something at this age. Yukon feels like he weighs twice as much as she does but I can still feel his spine and hips, but with her..there is really nothing to her, she's all fur and it makes me wonder why. A friend of mine gave me a recipe for Satin balls to try and help her gain some. What do you guys think? ???

He's quite a bit bigger..

puppies all grow at different times, in different spots... So, dont be too too concerned just yet. you should be able to feel the ribs, but not see them, though i guess with the pyrs, its hard to see anyway. with my breed, the BTs, they have so much muscle mass, and jigsaw  ( going on 6 months) Is at such an awkward stage right now i can't even begin to tell you, her rear is higher than her front, shes not fat, not skinny, but has lots of neck/back wrinkles. So, all pups are different... sorry, i dont know much about pyrs, but im sure someone can give you more insight :)

Yeah, I'm certain if she were a short haired breed her bones would protrude. She just isn't growing at the rate the other one is, not trying to compare because that's impossible and she's also female but the growth is not noticeable in her. I don't own a scale or I'd weigh her and see if she's gaining.

Satin balls can work for you but beware, as I recall tummy problems over there?? Introduce very slowly in very small amounts. The rule of thumb for average giant wieght gain is around 10 lbs a month. But that is an average, it may vary due to growth spurts and such. Being on the lean side is not a bad thing for those developing and growing bones. As long as she seems happy and energetic, bright eyed with an improving coat, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Okay, thanks for the advice, yes the tummy problems were over here, haha, and that's the first thing I thought about when I considered trying them w/her. I think their initial gain was good, esp considering that she has to make up for being under to start so maybe it's a slower go.

I hope she's happy, but she doesn't seem as happy as Yukon, but that could be her personality, he is more personable at this point. She's pretty energetic, still waiting for her coat to improve. She doesn't eat much still, whereas Yukon dives into his food, she doesn't consume much.

Is her coccidia gone yet?  That could be causing the lack of appetite, shes just got a sore tummy and dosent want to add to it.

With her having tummy issues its a tough call on what to give her.  Evo canned is a great food to get her eating, or Merrick..they both seem to be like candy to dogs.

Both your babies are oh so cute!

I have no idea, but I plan to get her to a vet next week to check. I didn't take her sooner because her stools went back to normal, all seems well there.

Yiska may never be as large as Yukon. Males seem to get a lot bigger and quicker. My largest female is about 85 pounds and Zoey, who is the smallest is around 74 pounds. We are hoping to weigh Tugster in the next couple of weeks- he was at 11 pounds at 8 weeks and now carrying him is getting difficult. So take her to the vet, keep an eye on her and make sure she is eating quality food- and she should mature normally. I still love seeing pics of Yiska and Yukon - what day were they born?

Thanks :) I love seeing pics of your guys too! Good to hear yours was the same weight at that time. I do expect him to be mucho larger than her, their mom was not one of the huge huge Pyrs, but she was also underweight when I saw her after having had and weaned a litter. They are eating great food too, so that's why I expected to see a nice change in her since they weren't eating well before I got them, but I guess it all takes time.

They were born on Dec 21
