Tie Outs?

Hi Guys - Wanted to get your opinions on tie outs.  Here's the situation.  The street I used to live on was a cul-de-sac and I would always have Ranger out and about with me while I was doing things in the front yard.  Now, however, they have opened up one end of the street and while there isn't a lot of traffic, there is enough that I don't feel comfortable to let Ranger roam free in the front yard without some kind of leash on to protect him from the folks who do decide to come flying through the neighborhood like a bat out of h-e-double hockey sticks.

Have any of you used tie outs before, and if so, which ones do you suggest?

Let me reiterate, I will be outside with Ranger AT ALL times while he is on the tie out.  I'd like for him to be able to roam around while I'm washing my car, gardening, etc. and not be cooped up inside on a gorgeous day.  I never leave him unattended outside, even though I have a fenced in backyard.. because...well, I'm paranoid.

Thoughts?

personally, our dogs have always pulled the ones like that out of the ground  :-\  so we get the ones that go around a tree, and have a separate piece that goes around the tree and it swirls around the base of the tree so they don't (normally) get tangled.

You said the magic words Heather! "Being outside with him at all times." I have issues with leaving a Puppers on a tieout by him/herself alone. That can lead to disaster. But while you're out there with him at all times - I see no problem with it.

The plastic coated shorter cables with swivels seem to work well with another cable fixed tree to tree high above ground with a trolly (sp), (or other above ground source.) Do you know which kind I'm talking about? That way there's a far less chance of becoming entangled. It gives them a "runway" of sorts without the danger. I'm not very good at explaining. Do you know what I mean?

Sometimes a tie out is necessary if there's lots of kids outside running around.  Normally Koby will just stay in our yard but when there's kids playing he bolts, he LOVES kids.  SO we do have the tie out, the spiraley kind, and covered in the "rubberized-plasticy stuff". lol  Ours also has a spring on the end just in case he runs and pulls the cable tight there's some give to it and he won't stranglize himself.  I don't LOVE the tie out, I get way paranoid when he's clipped to it but I also don't want him running away getting hit by a truck again. As long as your outside with him and he can get to a shady area, I think it's much safer than having him loose with the traffic going by.
