Patra My Akita could someone please advise
« on: October 28, 2007, 01:06:34 am »
I have a 7 year old akita Patra. She is a joy. but recently we lost our home and she has to stay temporarly with a friend. Everything was going good and now she has started using the bathroom with the home.
I don't know what to do. if she does not stop as this is the second time in 4 days. she would have to go to a shelter which i dread. she has been with us since she was a baby. It is not like she hasn't stayed with people before weather on vacation etc.
she likes were she is and when we go to visit she jumps for joy and doesn't even realize we are there until we show our selves. We have even tested for other family members that don't normally be around her to make sure she is enjoying herself.
I need help as to why she is all of a sudden starting to use the bathroom in the home.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your home.  :'(  This must be a very stressful time for your entire family including Patra.  With adults & older children we can explain and try to give them hope that things will improve at some point, but it's impossible for pets & young kids to understand these things, so in some ways it can be even more stressful sometimes for them, I think.  I hope that the people at Patra's foster home understand the stress that she's under and that they can be patient while she settles in.  In the meantime though, it would help if they made certain to take her outside for potty breaks every 1/2 to 1 hour during the day to avoid a full bladder.  Also if they can clean up potty accidents using something like Nature's Miracle so that there isn't any smell left that might intice her to "use" that spot again, that would help keep her from making these accidents a new habit.  If this persists, you may want to have her checked out by the vet to be sure that she doesn't have a urinary tract infection.  Also, if Patra's foster home has other dogs, she may be reacting to being new on the other dogs'  territory (just a thought).  I'm sure that more people will be on here in the morning to give you more advice.  I truly hope that you can have your whole family back together really soon.

The foster parent has been very patient exspecially due to the fact that she has never had a dog before.
she takes her out 2 to 3 times a day as her work hours don't allow her to go out more than that. Her foster mother is really really great and I think she was a little surprised that she was going in the home as she has not done that before.

I want to thank you for your advice and I think she is starting to understand Patra.  I will be getting her a crate so that she will not go in the house and that Miracle stuff does it really really work.  i would hate to have to replace her carpet it is really exspensive.

The crate will help alot, even if just to give Patra a "room" of her own that she can feel comfortable in.  As for the Natures Miracle, yes it works wonders!  It can be a little expensive, but well worth it compared to the price of a new carpet.   ;) :D

I agree, yes it does really work.  In fact, you may want to use it on the spots where Patra has already peed.  Though it is best used when the spot is new, it will often still take out older smells & stains, too.  First though, do the test spot since she has such expensive carpet.   ;)  I'd try it on an inside corner of a closet or something & follow the instructions carefully to be sure it doesn't fade the carpet color, but it's good stuff and really works.  The crate is a very good idea, but if she isn't crate trained already, you'll need to procede slowly at first and check on her often to be sure that she isn't getting panic-y.  When we've crated we like to put a stuffed Kong toy (frozen peanut butter & treats are good) inside the crate to keep the pup happy & busy until they get bored and take a nap.  That's worked well for us.  It's great that her foster mom is being so patient.  :)  Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Me and the foster parent just spoke and I am going to purchase the stuff Natures Miracle tomorrow.  she stated that she has been putting patra in the bathroom and feels that the crate would not be to good for patra.  We both agreed.  it has been a long time since patra has been in a crate.  She doesn't like going into the bathroom and her foster parent thinks it would just be more punishment for her.  The bathroom should do as it is big enough for her to walk around in.  she has not gone to the bathroom in the house since.  We both spent time talking with her and playing.  She is only in the bathroom while at work until we can get her use to the routine.
I want to thank you guys for your input.  I will update you on her progress. :D
