So, Tani is (ahem) perfect. She is really smart, doesn't chew stuff or pee in the house, has good manners, etc. She is the best dog ever in the whole world. Here's what's happening...We are moving to California in about 2 weeks. Most of the house is a maze of boxes and of course it's a weird and stressful vibe around here. In addition, hubby and I got this house as a fixer upper, and since the move kinda came out of nowhere, we weren't done fixing 'er up. Not only is all our stuff packed and all that, but I have had contractors and handymen in and out of here regularly to finish all the projects so we can sell the house. Tani is great - she will bark her head off when they come to the door and act like she wants to eat them. Then, I let them in and show her that they are allowed here, and she's cool. She wants to lick them and play and she's just herself. Even the stale bum sweat smelling guys that made me so uncomfortable that were here recently (having a low income is not a good excuse for not bathing and then cashing your day's wages at amscott and going to the bar). But, she was ok with those guys. So now there is another guy here. He is clean, shows up on time, his vehicle is newish, clean and well maintained, he wears headphones and whistles while he's working and blasts through the stuff we have to do. There is nothing overtly objectionably about this guy - he's polite, pleasant, professional and just does his thing. I've never left him alone in the house or anything. Funny thing is, Tani hates his guts. She stands back and growls at him with her hackles semi-up. She won't come near him. If I call her to me,  she gets all stressed if he is in the way, and as soon as he moves, she'll scamper a WIDE arc around him with her TAIL TUCKED and everything, and run over to me!! It's so strange...Shou ld I worry that he's going to make a skin suit out of me? Should I see if I can catch a glimpse of a "666" tattoo on his head? I don't get it. Is she stressed about all the changes here, or is this guy some kind of sicko and she's trying to tell me? I'm over thinking it and getting all paranoid. If it weren't for Tani's behavior, I would totally feel comfortable with the guy - enough to leave him here alone while I run an errand or something. Opinions? Anyone? Anyone? Did anyone read this far?? Helllooooooooo ooooo......????????

Navarre used to act weird around a friends friend.  He would sit and bark at him for no apparent reason.  I always thought it was weird cause he didn't really do that with anyone else (don't get all weirded out yet the guy wasn't a stalker or anything).  This guy was perfectly fine with my friends dogs and other dogs.  Well, it turns out that he was TERRIFIED of Navarre even though you would have never known it to look at him.  I used to always wonder if dogs really could smell fear, well I didn't wonder anymore!!

From what you describe though she's acting a bit afraid of him too, which would be a big red flag for me.  Does he smoke?  Maybe he smells like smoke.  Anyway, I wouldn't leave him alone with anything...jus t in case.
God placed me on this earth to accomplish certain tasks...I'm so far behind I'll never die!!

So, I just asked the guy some questions. He has a cat, but no dogs. He claims that animals usually like him. I asked him if she was making him nervous, and he said "a little", so maybe she's sensing that. Then he made and effort to pet her while she was already lying down. So, she got all sulky and started to do a submissive roll to her side, but she was still growling. So strange. I put her in my bedroom with a rawhide because I want her to be able to feel relaxed and have some space. Poor girl! I'll keep an eye on this guy...

I agree with the folks who say "never second guess your dog".  There might be nothing wrong with this guy - he might be a great guy who just happens to look or smell like someone else that Tani really doesn't like.  But why take a chance?  If you can't trust your dog, who can you trust?

I am going to second the trust the dog over the human being. I wouldnt leave the guy in the house alone and I wouldnt leave Tani where she can get to him. Also I dont know if locking her up in a bedroom is a good idea. There is something not right about this guy and she knows it and if she is in the bedroom then what ever threat she may pose to him, he no longer has that to worry about, also you are really stressing her out by doing locking her away. Keep her with you and keep her on a leash- hopefully this guy will be done soon.
Is this guy bonded and insured?

I had something similar happen with Kaila when I had the A/C guys here replacing the old unit.  A few differences are the my crew (all of them) are people wary - breed trait - and they don't like strangers in the house when I'm here alone.  All of the guys were nice and polite but there was this one guy that Kaila didn't like at all.  I kept the dogs in the computer room with me and the baby gate up.  Well, this one guy came up to the door and asked if he could have a couple of cokes for him and the crew and I said sure let me get them for you.  As I was getting up to leave the room Kaila made a lunge from the other side of the room and was heading for this guy.  I caught her and stopped her but she didn't want this guy anywhere alone with me at all.  Since I couldn't control the situation to keep her safe I put her away because I just didn't trust the guy to leave her alone when I said not to pet her.  I definitely fall in the category of trust your dog because they know when something's not right.

Off-topic a bit, but what a nice time for you to be moving to California.  Selling prices for houses are dropping, so more of them are being used as rentals causing the rental prices to drop.

Don't forget the sunscreen!

We are very excited to move - we're going to Northern California where it's nice and cool. Sunscreen, we got - we're moving from FLORIDA! We finally got a house - now we need to worry about selling the Florida house. We're in a fortunate circumstance being able to move without having to have our house sold. Hopefully, our house won't sit on the market for a year, though... Tani is looking forward to being a California Girl. However, I'll be she's looking more forward to not having strangers in and out of our house!!

Off-topic home question...can you rent your Florida home and wait two years to sell it?  From what I've been reading, home prices aren't expected to stop dropping for at least 18 more months.

Northern California has trees, a doggie heaven.
