My husband wants a puppy!!!!!!
« on: February 01, 2008, 11:56:10 pm »
ok I am five months pregant we have two dogs already and my husband came to me last night (very seriously I might add) and asked if we could think about a new puppy.

Now he knows that I am a sucker for dogs especially puppies and I would have every dog in the world.  but I had to think logically about this for a minute.  I then asked what it was he was wanting to get.  He then tells me a Pug.

He had a pug when we first got married and it died at the age of 14 years old.  We then got our two dogs that we have not to replace the pug but to fill the void. So I feel bad now.  He always wanted one agian but said that it would take a while before he could gert another one.  Well now it has been almost three years and he wants one.

Should I tell him maybe after the baby is born or should we just go for it.  I just know I am already having to work with Bell about her jumping I just dont want to make my life a lot harder with a new baby.  what do yall think?

Hey Amber! I'm 6.5 months pregnant. I only have one very very very mellow dog. But, I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER want to get a puppy right now. No way. For one thing, I can barely bend over. That doesn't really do much for dealing with a small puppy.

Babies need SO much. Puppies need SO much. The biggest reason I ever heard for rehoming dogs when I worked at the humane society was "We had a new baby". Now, I realize most of those people were dumb and shouldn't have had dogs anyway, but let's face it. Its a really hard thing to do!

And, if you are worried about your Weim being too hyper for a baby and having to put a lot of work into that situation, just think about adding potty training with a puppy, and multiple diaper changes a day with a baby (10-12 when they're newborns), bottles, all of that stuff...all on little to no sleep. Not to mention all of the regualar household stuff that you have to attend to.

Just one pregnant woman to another...WAIT on the puppy. For your own sanity.

Wow, that's a toughie!!! If it were me, I'd talk to him more about it. Tell him you would really like to get another dog, but also let him know of your concerns. Let him know at times it may be like he's the only one raising the new puppy! hahaha See what he thinks about it. I know whatever decision the two of you make will work out just fine. ;) :)

If he has his heart set on getting another pug, maybe you could talk to him about getting a juvenile from a breeder or a pug rescue group.  That way you get one that is already housebroken, hopefully settled down a little, and he gets his pug.  If he agrees to wait until the baby is a little older, then maybe you look at puppies, but if he was set on now, it would have to be an older, housebroken, dog. That would be the route I would go with my husband.  I know the day will come when he wants another springer spaniel.  I just don't want to deal with the puppy stage, so it will have to be an adult.  Men and their dream breeds.  Of course the fact that I wanted an IW, pyr and TM and have them, doesn't enter into the equation at all.  LOL

thank everyone so much

Yes I completely agree with everyone.  I really couldnt believe that he was asking this of me.  But I tried to talk to him about it and he was like if we get it now then it will be housetrained by the time the baby comes. MEN!

I told him that just because our two dogs housetrained very early(they havent had an accident in the house since they were ten weeks old) that it probably wouldnt go so well with a new puppy.  Also I told him that yes the puppy might be housetrained but it would be in the middle of teething when the baby came, chewing up everything and if I found a whole bunch of stuff chewed up I would probably loose it.

But i feel like i am talking to a brick wall because right after our conversation then i found him online looking at pug breeders and when I asked him he was like well I would like to see who we will eventually get one from.(yea trying to be smooth)HELP!!!!!

Having had four kids and being done with all that. (Almost done - still have one kid to house break!) let me just say: I am SOOOO jealous!!! I really want another dog (or puppy) and it's my hubby who's putting the kibosh on it!! But in your case, it's smart to wait a bit.  Unless, as was suggested, you can get him to go through a rescue and get an older pup who's already trained, or at least partially trained. That's an awesome idea!
