Several Breed Help,Newf,Leo,Saints?
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:23:34 am »
Some of you may have read that hubby is wanting a Saint Bernard, when I show him several pics of several different breeds he says he likes them all.I have been doing some reading on all 3 but without having to really compare between what I read...What are some of the attributes of each breed ? This can help us decide,we like them all :o
Remember we have a Great Pyr male so whichever dog would not be so much of a dominant dog by nature.Thats reason for another breed then Great Pyr,we have been told by so many to have 2 male pyrs is hard to keep in harmony.

So details please :D..On the Saints,Leos and Newfs and Landseer Newfs?

Are they good in the house, are they calm or hyper dogs, good with children, good with other dogs..cats..ho rses, hardheaded, easily trainable..All of this will help.

When I got Clifford I researched most of the large breeds. I already have a Jack Russel and wanted a large breed. The reason I picked him is Newfoundlands are not known to be agressive, but very laid back. I wanted a dog I could take everywhere and not worry about people coming up to pet him. I wanted a calm, not barky dog. Of couse right now he is 6 months old and anything but calm. However his laid back personality and love of all people and dogs was there from the start. You can certainly get a dog from any breed that could have these qualities, but Newfoundlands in general seem to be the most consistantly calm, laidback, friendly, not over protective. I did also want one I could enjoy taking to the beach to swim and play in the water. Our water is still frozen here, so haven't got to experience that much yet, but if there is even a puddle he goes for it.
In looks and how much care goes into the coats I would say all the breeds you named are pretty equal.
Good Luck deciding. Even starting to think about and looking around for a new dog is always fun.
