Afternoon at PetsMart
« on: August 08, 2005, 05:29:34 pm »
So, today I decided to load up the car for a trip to Petsmart...hav e not gone since I have had Willow.  Loaded up the car with Irie and Gunner and Willow....  What a handful.  to Poms and a dane pup...lol  The poms get to ride in the front of the basket.  Willow sniffed and played with all the toys....she had all the toys she coud reach in the toy aisle on the floor....very funny....  I am going to try and make it a weekly trip just for socialization. ...  If my bank account canhandle the damage (oh well I guess the teenagers can forgo eating!!!!  lol).  All 3 dogs got quite a bit of attention and everyone was very positive and ohhhed and awwed of them...  much better then the last time we went out.  I am thinking about taking Willow to their puppy class...any thoughts on that?

i took my chihuahua to the puppy class. i learned more than she did in the end..lol its great for socializing the pups but not so much on training since they are more interested in playing with eachother and not so much into training.

Personally I wouldn't do a pup class at Petsmart just because it's too distracting.  I took Sanity to Petsmart just for shopping and they happened to be having a class there.  All the people IN the class stopped and clamored around him.  I would hate to see what happened if I was in the class and the passerbys stopped.  A half hour class would take two hours!  Not to mention it's rough for the distractions.  You didn't mention if this was a puppy class or a puppy kindergarten.  The major difference being that in class it's more intensive learning, and kindergarten it's more like "Learn to play nice".

I would ask around, see if you can get some suggestions.  If all else fails, turn to the phone book.  Call laces up, ask to observe a class.  I lucked out at my training center.  I went to work with my dad one day, (He was a sign Salesman at the time) and he was selling this place their sign.  I couldn't believe how huge this place was and it was all for dogs?  I started going as soon as they opened and I never left.  Trust me, if you find a place like that you'll never leave, and you'll never regret it.

We're in a pup class at persmart, the class is basic but worth the socialization,etc.. the only part I don't care for is the slick floors.. A bit rough on a pup getting up and down from sit.

Puppy class is just awesome!!...Samson went through 2 of them & we are waiting to start adult classes...Have no disallusion that the classes are to teach the puppy though...They are to teach you!...lol!...Petsmart classes, I don't know...Do you have a local Humane Society?...Ours offers puppy & adult classes & it is great!!!...We have a Petco that offers classes but the trainer uses shock collars on her own dogs from the time they are pups....I am sure she doesn't teach that in class but it makes me wonder about their choice in trainers.
