Pet Health Insurance
« on: December 16, 2008, 05:15:43 am »
I am looking into pet health insurance.  With Cody breaking his leg and Sierra's never ending skin issues, it feels like we are personally financing our vet's next vacation!  :)

Does anyone else have pet health insurance?  I would appreciate any feedback, or if you recommend any particular plan.

Well, Sierra's skin issue is pre-existing so it most likely won't be covered and Cody's leg is now healed.  So I'm getting this as a lesson learned type of decision, since Cody's leg cost close to $750.00 and all in all Sierra's vet bills over the last year and a half have been close to $1000.00 with both vets she's been too.  It's kind of aggravating that we've spent that much on Sierra and, between two vets, her diagnosis is STILL a mystery.  With spending that much money in such a short period of time, anything we get back is appreciated!

I'd recommend checking out some of the online review sites for pet health insurance.  Be sure that any plan you pick will cover the big costly things that big paws are prone to such as hip dysplasia and other orthopedic problems.  Not all plans do.

Also be sure that what your insurance allows as the UCR is even remotely close to what your vet charges.  For example, let's say that your vet charges $250 for a procedure but the insurance only allows $100.  The insurance will then only pay $80 for your that procedure(if it's an 80/20 insurance like most people coverage is).  If you still have to pay your $50 coinsurance then your reimbursement is further reduced and you'll end up with $30 from the insurance for a $250 procedure.

Thank you for bringing this up.  It's something I've been putting some thought into lately as well.  Any Canadians with Pet Health Insurance?  ???
