Tied up, I think
« on: August 23, 2005, 10:26:53 pm »
Well, I had jury duty today and did not think much about it.  I got called with a group to wait for a trial and I thought it was gang bangers with robbery or something.  Then they announced it was murder charges.  My heart fell.  Haven't been picked but have to return tomorrow and I might end up on the jury so I'll be out of touch for awhile. I will make Niki's therapy dog test Saturday come h*ll or high water but I might be a little out of touch.  No big deal but I will let you know how it comes out.

So lucky Peggy. I got all the way to the jury seat and then after I answered my questions I was dismissed. I was so sad because I have always wanted to be on a real jury. I hope you get out if though since it seems as though you don't want to be there.

It is not that I really want to get out of it because I know that I can be fair and would do the best I can.  The problem is that this can be so emotional and I know the people on BPO have very strong feelings or they would not be dog lovers like we all are. so you understand how I feel, I think.  What I mean is, how can you make decisions like that and learn to live with it no matter what.  Hard to explain but I know my friends on this board can understand.  We want to hang people like that but we want to be fair too.  No wonder we like dogs better. whew it is easier.

My boyfriend recently had to be on a jury for a child molester. Oh man was that a toughie! Cuz of COURSE he is vehemently on the side of a child, but you still have to be fair! It was so hard! He's a teacher, and a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate--he goes to court on behalf of an abused or neglected child).

Anyway, they ended up finding the guy guilty, but they deliberated for like, 6 hours!

That's pretty unusual that they chose him to sit on the jury for a child molestation case if he volunteers for CASA and is a teacher! I would think that would make him incredibly biased.

I've wanted to volunteer for CASA, too, but working 2 jobs and volunteering for the Humane Society pretty much eats up all of my free time unless I don't want to eat or sleep.

Yeah, I was surprised, too. But, he IS actually incredibely unbiased and very, very fair. That's what makes him a good teacher, too. So, I guess he just answered the questions in a way that demonstrated that.

He just finished his CASA training class a few weeks ago. He will be going to a facilitation hearing for his first child on September 12. I know what you're sayin, jj it takes up ALOT of time. I fear that he's going to be a busy boy this year! He's also teaching Chemistry and Physics (along with his regular Physical Science) and he's never taught those subjects before! So, he's going to be a little crazy! hahahahhaa!

You will find (according to my B-friend) that you have no choice but to take it very seriously and allow your conscience AND your rational mind to guide you. He was very nervous, too. But he said that once he got into the court room, he was more confident about doing the right thing and KNOWING it was the right thing. Don't worry, you'll do your civic duty smashingly, Peggy!

I had jury duty and did the right thing and didn't try to get out of it.  It sucked, I sat on a hard chair for two and a half days and watched little punks all tell a different story about the same event.  Then when decision time came I was the one who disagreed with everyone.   I thought the kid was guilty but I gave in because the evidence didn't really prove it without a reasonable doubt plus the rest of the group was older, more established, and almost mean to me.

More power to you if you make it through without getting an ulcer. :-\
Thanks,
