Diabetes

Does anyone know about diabetes in dogs?  I was just wondering because the blood panel taken yesterday before Sapphire's spay showed elevated glucose.  It is probably nothing, but the vet did say that diabetes is a possibilty, so she has to go back for another sample in a few weeks.

Thank you for replying, Laurel.  I thought that feeding raw, as we plan to do next year anyway, would help, since it cuts out all carbohydrates (I understand they, along with some vegetables like carrots and corn, are the main culprit in glucose spikes).  I'm glad to hear that it might solve the problem entirely.

Yes, Laurel, with all the promotion you are doing, you really ought to get a free bag of the food for every new customer you convinced.  Just try getting a promise like that out of them, though...  ;D

I think that Sapphire is fine, but I thought I would ask about it, just in case.  Does anyone know the symptoms?  Is drinking lots of water, for example, one of them, as it is in people?

Thank you,

Sofia

Thank you for the thought, Babs; however, for now, I'm not very worried.

Oh, the other thing was, my grandmother has a diabetic cat so they put him on a diet that is high in....carbohyd rates and fiber.  I was surprised, to say the least, but that is recommendation, according to http://papa.essortment.com/caninediabetes_rkvf.htm

Quote
Weight loss in dogs should be carefully monitored and done over a long period of time. Hills/Science Diet, Purina and Iams/Eukanuba each have diets that are beneficial to the control of the diabetes as well as weight loss. These diets are usually high in fiber and carbohydrates. Your veterinarian will give you specific instructions on the type of food, amount be given and what times of the day you should give it. Normally the food will be broken up into at least two feedings. The morning one will be given with the insulin dose and the second one will be given during the peak blood glucose times as determined by the monitoring that would have been done in the hospital or, if two insulin injections are given a day, the second feeding will be given then.

Surprising!  Common sense would seem to indicate the opposite approach, but, then again, I'm not a vet.

The article itself pretty much answered my questions.  If anyone has anything to add, however, I would appreciate hearing it.
