Maia just won't go!!!!
« on: October 13, 2005, 02:42:12 am »
We got to Corporate housing, a one bedroom apartment in Naperville, Il about 4 pm local time yesterday.  The dogs had last been out and gone to the bathroom at 9am local time.  Rocco finally after 2 walks peed,  drank too much water and barfed in the bathroom.  Maia drank very little water and didn't pee until this morning.  Rocco has managed to poop late last night and this morning.  Maia has yet to grace me with her pile, what should I do?

My dogs are great on leash and walk nicely by my side, Maia on the left, Rocco the right.  Therefore they don't venture off during walks to poop, they will stop to pee.  So, I took the gentle leaders off, took the out one at a time, on a flexy leash and it took a few minutes with each to convince them they could break the heal and go potty.  Still no Maia poop.  How long do I wait until I worry and frantically search for a vet.  Maia has a urinary tract infection (from her spay) and has puss coming out of there yet I can force her to drink so she will pee.  The poop is another issue, by the time I get home from work today she will have 2 meals worth built up (that is if she doesn't go ahead and go in her cage today).

It is going to be a fun 47 days (48 days total minus yesterday).
Thanks,

Emily and 1 husband, 1 boy, 1 on the way, and 4 crazy dogs

I would worry about the peeing because of the UTI, but I wouldn't worry about the poop just yet. It might very well just be a comfort issue. In her mind she might  think something along the lines of 'i poop in my backyard. this is not backyard, therefore I shouldn't poop here'. Eventually she will have to go. If she goes another full day I would probably look for a vet to make sure, but I think the key is going to be to convince them 'it's okay to poop here and it's ok to poop while you're on a leash'.

I have a friend who moved to arizona and it took them a week to convince their dog that it was ok to go to the bathroom. He basically held it until they went out and bought a peice of pregrown grass to plant in the backyard, because he was afraid to go in the dirt lol  :D

When our sheltie had bladder problems, he also didn't go.  The couple of times it happened the vet also gave him an enema each time.

Emily, have you found a vet in the Naperville area? If not I can recommend someone in Darien, that is just south of Downers Grove. PM me if you're interested.

We got poop from Maia last night, a nice big nasty pile.  No poop from here this morning though but I can only ask for so much.  She has also started to pee again.  My dogs are so great.
Thanks,
