Crede's submissive peeing...
« on: November 07, 2005, 05:17:56 pm »
The adoption rep warned us about his submissive peeing and I experienced it this morning.  What do I do for this?

Under what circumstances did the peeing occur?   :)

What were the circumstances that caused the submissive peeing?

We had a pup years ago that I rescued. He would pee if you stood over him,  talked high pitched baby talk with him or approached him too quickly.

Your best bet is to ignore it and clean it up out of his sight. Try and figure out what triggers it and avoid them if you can.

Well, I was calling him to me in the kitchen to put some medicine in his eyes.  He's only sometimes comfortable enough to come when called so far...doesn't happen consistantly yet.  I think he knew what was up because he made a beeline for his crate, and I caught his collar and he peed.

How old is he? It might be a puppy thing. Kiah used to do that when she was younger and got excited. Like when we came home or some else came to the door. She out grew it by 6 months. Try to make sure he has an empty bladder before the stimulus. If it's when you come home get him outside right away and keep it low key. Don't act all excited to see him. Keep that for after he's done his job outside.

He's only six months old, and yes, definitely still getting used to everything.  I didn't scold him...actually it kind of surprised me and I let his collar go and he went and hid in his crate.  I cleaned it up and didn't even say anything to him at all.  But then I had to get him out of his crate to go outside and he wouldn't come, so I had to take him by the collar to get him out.  Once he realized we were going for a walk, he was fine.

Am I doing okay so far?  It's been so long since I've had an impressionable puppy to take care of!  My two prior dogs were rescued later in life - Mari, my greyhound, was rescued at 7 years old, and Kaia, my minpin/chihuahua mix was rescued at age 10.   So I'm pretty unfamiliar with this whole puppy thing!!!!

Lyn and Tajsa are right - the submissive peeing usually occurs in a situation that is somewhat emotionally overwhelming for the dog.  Common situations are meeting new people, getting scolded, having a loved one leave or come home, or being spoken to in a high-pitched, excited voice.

In this case, I think you probably just startled him when you grabbed his collar.

Maybe the next time you go to put the medicine in his eyes, maybe go to him and start off with a treat and some low key petting, so that he has a happy association with getting the meds.  If you keep him busy with some peanut butter, he might not even notice you put the medicine in!  Ranger does that all the time... "Mmm, peanut butter!  Hey, how did my nails get so short??"   ;D

If you know that he has a pre-disposition to submissive peeing, just try to keep things like you leaving the house, and especially you returning to the house, real low key.  Give him lots of chances to empty things out, even if he can normally hold it for awhile.  I think you will find that he will probably eventually grow out of it...

You are doing just fine!   :D

I just totally can't believe how perfect he is for our family...how perfect he is period!  We constantly tell him what a good boy he is and make a HUGE big deal out of his baby steps, like coming out of the crate on his own to find us, or exhibiting play behaviour.

Oh and last night....my son Declan was crawling around and hit his head and started crying and Crede was **RIGHT THERE** sniffing him and was just so concerned and distraught by his crying.  I've never seen anything like that before!  When I sat Declan down on the floor by him, Crede would inch closer to him so that his snout was always touching him in some way.  And he sleeps (keeps watch?) right outside Declan's room.  He is simply an amazing animal and we feel so lucky to have him.

See, I have alot of experience with greyhounds mostly, who are relatively independent.  Of course there are exceptions, but they mainly keep to themselves and don't care excessively about their people.  No fault of their own - it's just how they're bred and (not)socialized that does it.  So to see a dog that is just so into his people and so interactive is kind of a new, and definitely wonderful, thing!

Oh he's definitely housetrained.  Actually hasn't had an accident, other than this one incident of submissive peeing, since we've had him (knock on wood).  He always pees as soon as he gets outside and then again and maybe a third time, on our walk, and every time we praise him profusely!!!

Crede is just gorgeous!

And already being so concerned about what's happening to his Boy is such a good sign!  Is his boy just as interested in Crede?   When they're in sync with eash other, that baby/puppy relationship is just the most precious thing in the world.

As far as the peeing, my aunt had a basset mix who did this when she first came home from the shelter.  She just kept it very smooth and quiet when it would happen--the only correction gave was an "Uh-oh!  Didja have an accident?", and then she would just mop up without any further comment.  And she also made sure that Barbie went out to potty every hour, on the hour, with lots of praise and lovies when she went outside.

It didn't take very long--maybe 2 weeks or 3 at most--for Barbie to get enough confidence that this was HER family and HER house that the peeing stopped.  I think as soon as he believes that he's your baby, and you're his people, and that you all belong together in the house, the peeing will resolve.  He just needs some time and lots of lovies.

Thanks!  He is a pretty good lookin' pup, if I do say so myself!   :D

Yes, Declan is quite taken with Crede...I'll sit Dec on the floor by Crede and he starts patting him and trying to "climb" him.  Of course, Dec's only 10 months old, so he can't really climb on him yet, but Crede just kind of looks at him and then looks away at something else.  And all the while, my husband and I are praising Crede and telling Declan "nice", which is the first word he learned the meaning of, because we knew he'd be around animals alot and needed to learn right away to be gentle.
