Puppy on Parade?
« on: November 24, 2005, 11:49:17 am »
There’s a Santa Claus parade in town this weekend (not a huge production - small town type of parade) and we’d love to take Kate with us.  Has anyone brought a pup to a parade before?  She’s almost 5 mnths now, and isn’t too fazed by anything.  The loudest thing there (I can think of) would be the sirens on the firetruck…

Your opinions would be appreciated  ;D

I haven't with Gunther, but I have with Keiko.  Of course nothing phases her, so I knew she would be fine.

Just be prepared for lots of loud people, big crowds, and honking cars.  Plus horses, motorcycles (if they have those Shriner people) and maybe a band?  I guess you said it will be small, but it's always good to be prepared.

Thanks for your opinions guys!  I'm thinking she won't freak out (but) if she does get skittish, we'll take off.  I'm looking forward to it though - we got her a cute little Christmas bandana and now she gets to show it off  ;)

Thanks again - I'll be sure to let you know how it goes and I'll watch out for the Shriners!!!  :D  Too funny...

Make sure she's up to date on all of her shots and then take her everywhere!  I'm big on socializing my critters...eve n the goats get to go on trips.  (ok, so it's to the feed store but it's still a trip...)  I'm paranoid about parvo and lepto since they are so incredibly difficult to kill and live for so long, that's why the reminder about the shots.  But yes, the more she's out, the better in my opinion.

Cricket - I am SUCH a stickler for up-to-date shots.  I know - parvo scares me too - it's awful.  I hardly brought Kate anywhere until all her shots were done.  I was paranoid...

We bring Kate out to the farm lots (where I board my horse), she's great in town (with car noise, etc.), is awesome with kids, I've never seen her freak out over anything yet, except once when a big 18-wheeler was using it's air-breaks, she jumped a bit, but only for a second.  She goes almost everywhere with us in the truck too  ;)

I'm excited.  I'd like to get her familiar with crowds of people more than anything.  She gets sooooooooo excited when we come across someone on a walk, it's silly actually how crazy she gets (so) am hoping when there's a lot of people around (as opposed to 1 or 2 other than us) she learns to calm down a bit.  We'll see!

I'm doing the same w/Gunther.  He gets lots of people attention down by the beach, but I need to get him to different places.  Although with him, he doesn't get excited, he gets more nervous, so socialization is very important.  I'm taking him to a dog show tomorrow that a friend is showing in.  Not only will there be lots of people, but he can get used to large groups of dogs, too since it's an all breed show.  He's doing so well around kids now, they don't freak him out nearly as much as they used to.

WELL - Kate did absolutely awesome at the parade today!  She was SUCH a good girl!  I'm so proud of her.  Saw tonnes of people and dogs, she got lots of attention and was never stressed or nervous about anything!

I am SO proud, I really didn't think she'd be as calm as she was.  Sirens, Shriners (oh ya - they were there in their crazy little cars!), horses, megaphones, marching bands - everything handled with no problems!  I don't even think she noticed half the time...

She was so comfy, just sat down on the grass and chewed on a stick.  She still jumps up on people when they come to see her, hopefully obedience class will solve this (I need to get going on enrolling her right away for January)...

Anyhow, I'm really happy and so glad she was a delite at the parade!!!  YAY!!!  ;D

Zoocrew - how did Gunther do at the show?  Let us know!!!  ;)

Hey, that's great to hear that she did so well.  Wow, what a good girl.

Gunther was very well behaved.  Not as many breeds there as I was hoping, it was an all breed open invitation (I believe) show, but just not that many breeds came.  He was such a good boy, even though my friend's dog dislikes him.  He met a lovely ridgeback and played with her quite a bit.

There were two other danes there, one big harl, and a 6 mo old brindle.  He was soooo cute.  Two neos that rocked, lots of pits and staffies, and tons of toy breeds.  Chis, paps, ratties, toy fox, schipperkes, lundehunds, klee kais, american eskimo, chinese crested, american hairless, shelties, a basset, and a few I'm sure I forgot.  I got pics if anyone wants to see.
