Thinking of adopting a 9 month old Newf.. Questions!!!
« on: March 17, 2006, 05:47:43 pm »
We were looking for a puppy but this girl caught my eye! She quite the distance from us.. about 4 hours.

I'm still awaiting a reply from her owners.. so she might have already found a home.. But I hope not cause I want her. LOL

Only question I have is concerns housetraining. From the ad I'm thinking she is an outdoor dog. Not a good thing since she isn't spayed. ::) But I'm just wondering how difficult it would be to housetrain a 9 month old?

I have a pic from the ad I'll attach.  ;D

I got Hovis at 4 and a half months, she was an outside dog, a couple of weeks and she was fine though every now and again she'd have an accident.

She's 19 months now and no problems, crossing fingers touching wood etc...

Andy

P.S. she looks a cutie, but ask how she interacts with the family, if she hasn't had much contact they can be very jumpy and demonstrative

We got Cowboy at 18 months and he's been the perfect dog!  He's literally never put a foot wrong.

Good luck!  I hope it works for you!!!

Not trying to put you off Lyn, but something seems wrong in that picture, but I really don't have any idea what.
Maybe it's nothing at all, I really don't know, I can't figure it out.

After re-reading their ad I'm not sure if they mean she's kept outdoors or prefers to be outdoors. ???

I asked about her personality, obedience training, what she's like with kids, cats and other dogs, and whether she is housetrained. I forgot to ask about health issues. :-[ If they still have her I will be sure to ask about that..

Any other questions I should ask?

I'm weird,I think it's just the picture, it almost looks like it is just the top half of the dog :) Told you I'm weird.

Brandon, we must have posted at the same time. I know what you mean about the picture.. First thing I noticed is that she is tied to the doorknob.

There was one other picture, but the owner I think is in it. So I wasn't sure if I should post it here.

Melissa did some investigative digging, I looked at the other picture and she is cute!  It sounds to me they didn't know what they were getting into with a giant breed puppy. Poor pup just needs some loving.

Very true. Well let's hope that's all it is.. that they were not prepared.

Hubby is still iffy on her. He thinks a young pup would be easier to integrate into our home. Were as I think an older pup would be better for Bubba. They would be closer in size and really not that far off in age.

I have adopted 3 at various stages in life. Keegan was 6 months and had 3 homes before he got here. Same situation, someone got him and didn't know that he'd grow quite so big! Dolan came as a 6-8? year old. Oliver arived on Thanksgiving as a 15 month old (not housebroken)! It took us about a week to get him mostly potty trained. He had an accident now and then for a couple of weeks, now he asks to go out whenever he needs to. None of them have had trouble integrating into our framily. All came from different situations.

Good luck!

I personally wouldn't worry about her age. But then I would take in every newf I saw if I could ::)

I do wish people would do their research into a breed before having one, just because you like the look of a dog and you are told how gentle they are it doesn't mean to say you can live with one!! A young Newf, especially one who hasn't had any trianing, can be a nightmare to live with... Even to those of us who adore the breed and have had them for years!

Good luck on taking hubby into it, in some ways an older pup can be easier than a little one. And she is still young enough to mould into how you would want her ;)

Oh what a shame, lets hope she has found a good home then.

I'm sure there is a lovely little Newfie pup just waiting for you though ;D
