Drake's Dog Fur Hat
« on: May 01, 2006, 09:58:38 pm »
VIP Fibers has gotten the fur I sent and will be spinning it within a week or so, Drake is on the list!  Check out the link, you have to scroll down to see Drake's listing:

Can't wait to get my hat! ;D  And NO, It's not going to cost me $217.  I sent about 32 oz. of fur and that's what it would cost to get it all spun and to make the hat.  They only need 10 oz. and I'm going to donate the rest.

The initial payment was $55 which was the cost to make the hat and shipping & handling.  But there will be another charge to spin the 10 oz. of fur to make the hat with.  I'm not sure what that is going to be but this will be one expensive hat.  Although, it will be something I will keep forever so it will be worth the cost.  Maybe if I decide to do this again, I'll just have them spin the fur and then give the yarn to Sarah's Grandma to make something.  ;D

It is such a great cause. They are working on one now that will be made from only rescue dogs.

I'm sure that Drake's hat will be warm and everyone will want one!

So I've got a decision to make.  I have been communicating with VIP fibers and after multiple phone calls and multiple invoices that ranged from $217 to $130 US, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do.  As much as I would like to get this hat done, it's going to cost me $130.73 to have the fur spun and the hat knitted.  That seems like a bit of a rip-off to me.  Am I wrong?  I know it's a hand made cap, but I don't know if I want to spend that much on just a hat.  I am thinking that I will just get the fur spun, which will still cost me $70, and then have a friend or a Grandma knit the hat for me. I have a few more days to decide, they haven't even spun his fur yet. What do you guys think?  Am I being cheap?  ??? ??? ???

If you know someone that knits I'd say just get it spun...I mean it'll probably be even more special if it's made by someone you know.

No your not being cheap at all, and VIP fibers certainly are not either!!! Getting it spun and then having someone else knit the hat would be the avenue I would go. $70 for having it spun means they are going to charge over $60 to knit it ??? Sounds high to me.
