Question about a breed
« on: August 06, 2006, 09:25:24 am »
My fiance has been looking at chesapeake bay retrievers.  Now we would not get one anytime soon becasue i am not ready to get another dog at all.  I need my time  for a while.  but does anyone knowabout the breed.
He is an avid hunter and wants a dog that will hunt duck and geese.  I need my friends help about this breed i need to know about temperment, need for exercise and has any one had a bad experience with them.
Thanks for any info

My friends mom has one. Rosie is trained to hunt with her husband. She is a fantastic hunter from what I hear. What a laid ,back great temperment she has. Friendly with kids too. She is the only one I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. What I saw from her was a fantastic, loving and loyal dog. As far as I know she gets a couple of walks a day. Nothing as high maintance as a Vizsla ....lol or a weim... ;)

O yea the way i get rid of bells energy is a 2.8 mile run and a 1 mile rollerblade.  Yea and she is still crazy.  But i will say that their is hope for rosie calming down  a little.  After my uncle had his wiem nuetered he calmed right down and after bell went into heat she is alot calmer. ;D

The people I used to rent horse pasture from have a chessie . She's super sweet , smart and beautiful ! She's their only dog and she's very well trained , always off leash , etc . Once when I tried to open their porch door to leave my rent money ( she usually is kept in the backyard when they're not home ) she told me very clearly that I was not to enter their house ! LOL 'Bout made me pee my pants when I opened that door and she came running at me with her hackles up , barking ! So I'd say she's a good guard dog  ;D Very nice dog when they're around  ;)

Chessies have a reputation of being harder to train than Labs, more hard headed.  That said, they have not been over bred like Labs have been.  I suspect it will be easier to find a good Chessie than to find a good Lab (from someone who spent 10 yrs trying to find a Lab line to buy into).

I looked into Chessies not to long ago.  I was thinking about getting one and may eventually.  I asked a friend of mine that is a Lab man all the way and he said that they were good dogs but could be a little more protective and aggressive.  But then again he was comparing them to his Labs.

Yea i have been reading and researching them.  They say that they are friendly and affectionate but will take care of thier home if needed to.  But it also says they are alot harder to train because they are far more stubborn than LAbs and Golden retrivers.

My brother has a Chessie and he is very protective of his family. Oscar is a hunting dog and it came naturally to him. However Oscar is very hard headed and can be aggressive. I'm really glad that my brother has him under control. Oscar took a lot of training as far as obedience goes. When you're ready for another puppy you'll know deep inside. :)

My sister in Michegan had a lovely chessie that they rescued as a youngster for  about 10 years. He was a failed hunter, I believe, just didn't make the grade and became one of their cherished family. He was very suspicious of strangers and protective of the house, though, took awhile to warm up to strangers. Great with small animals-They had a procession of cats over the years and dog sat numerous times. The largest drawback was finding an area vet to treat him, most would not because of the breed's unpredictible temperment??? Couldn't prove it by Sam though.

knew a guy that had one and then got another one; they were soooo very beautiful.  he trained them for duck retrieving and said they were really good at it.  they were not friendly at all toward strangers, but very affectionate w/ him and his family.  good luck
