Rolled Third Eye?? Anyone???
« on: October 03, 2006, 12:28:36 pm »
And the plot thickens...... ...

Seems as though Cosmo's third eyelids are rolled and that is they cause of the "Cherry Eye" appearance.  The vet recommended an opthamologist for him.  She said the third lid cannot be functioning correctly the way it is.  Not to mention it is the cause of the constant eye muck all of the time.  (Sam will be so disappointed if he can't clean Cosmo's eyes everyday over and over!)

Good news though, Cosmo is now home and safe.  He is very disoriented and unsure of what to do.  Poor Big Boy.

Tina, the vet loved the idea to claim Pink Eye when asked!!

If you mean rolled third eyeLID... then yes, I can relate. Again, with Connor. His right eye had cherry eye real bad. He went through surgery for that and it healed perfectly, looks gorgeous, no more problems.
His left eye is another story. First it had cherry eye. Then it healed by itself... then the third eyelid rolled out. Then one day it swelled up SO HUGE that it was covering at least half of his eye if not more. Took him to the same vet who did his first surgery, and doc told me Connor's third eylid was deformed, and it was not going back to normal on its own, and he could do a surgery on it that was not a typical cherry eye surgery. So we did that. It looked like it was going to heal up fine. Then it didn't, really. :-[ Then we moved to GA, so I can't even take him back to the same vet. My next stop with him is an eye specialist, and I am currently saving up money for the next surgery. Some days his eye looks ok and some days (like today) it looks bad. A steroid helped him for a while. Now I give him something to fight infection. It is a constant stress for me! He seems not to be bothered by it, thank goodness! I am going to look for some pictures to show you. I'll be back.

Meanwhile, I am glad to hear Cosmo is home and safe!! :)

Here are some photos of what Connor went through with his rolled eylid. In the first picture the left eye was getting bad... it got even worse to the point where surgery was very necessary. (He had already had successful cherry eye surgery on the right eye.)

The second photo is after surgery, the eyelid is trying to heal but it's irritated.

The third picture is recent, with the eylid healed up nicely but still covering his eye a little bit. Some days it looks good like this and other days it is irritated. :(

I hope Cosmo doesn't have to go through as much crap as Connor has!!!

Rebekah!!

It is the same thing.  Originally she said it was cherry eye, then an anatomic defect and now rolled third eye.  My vet isn't crazy.  She just couldn't get a good look while he was awake because he is a bit manic in the office.  She called me right after they anesthesized him to say she wasn't going to remove the glands and then went to do some more investigating.

Cosmo's eyes are actually much more pronounced than Connor's eye and it is in both!!  Thanks for taking the time to post pictures of Connor.  Even though it is scary it is always better if someone has taken the path.  I am taking him to an opthamologist so I can get a better idea of the surgery, his need and the cost.  I will let you know what I find out.

I am going to look through my pics of him and see if I have a good one to show you.  He is sleeping soundly and his eyes look horrible right now.  I might sneak in and take a picture.

So did your vet just examine him real good or did he get any kind of surgery today? Poor Cosmo!!! :-[

I have seen pictures of other danes with this same problem. I guess it is a genetic thing. I will definitely be interested in what happens when you take Cosmo in for further investigation. ;)

The vet put Cosmo under for cherry eye surgery and realized that it wasn't the issue.  He got his teeth cleaned and toenails cut while in a drug induced sleep.  My poor boy is still sooooo crashed.
