Urinary Incontinence -- really thirsty -- diabetes??
« on: November 10, 2006, 09:40:33 am »
Just had an upsetting convo with my bf. Her beloved sharpei/pittie mix has started peeing herself when she is sleeping in bed and seems to be really thirsty lately. $300 today at the vet and no answer to the cause. Her urine was clean, no glucose so kinda ruled out diabetes mellitus. Has anyone had a dog with this issue? Anyone with a dog having diabetes insipidus?

I have a dog like this, Maggie is spay incontinent. She's on hormones now and it stopped.

Sounds like it may be incontinents (which can be treated) but was blood drawn to check her kidneys also?

urinary incontinence happens in many spayed females, esp overweight ones.
it happens just as you describe minus the excessive thirst.
the thirst added to this, would concern me.
hopefully it is not serious.

yes the thirst leads me to believe it may be diabetes insipidus -- the type of diabetes that is from lack of hormone ADH and not insulin/sugars related. Her initial kidney blood work was fine, they plan on measuring hormone levels next week.
