starting to try the dremel : there was blood...
« on: July 02, 2005, 07:24:10 pm »
so....i am taking bits and pieces from what everyone says, and i am now using van pattens meat roll cut up into squares the size of pepparoni on a bagel bite as "positive" treats.  i am using them when outside, in the elevator, in the car, in the apartment, and decided to use them for the dremel process.  WELL, i just spent an hour playing with the dremel and the kids.  having it off and smelling it, turning it on and smelling it, touching it to toes when off, getting close to toes when on ECT...at some point, angus got really worked up, and i went to give him a treat and he nearly took off my finger.  there is blood on my floor, blood on my pants, a square of skin missing, and a very sad mommy lol.

GOOD NEWS: the dogs didn't bleed, only mom.
GOOD NEWS: i got to touch 2 of codys toes, and he was COOL with it
GOOD NEWS: angus didn't get the whole finger!

k bye

well....i have now gotten to a place with angus where i can sit next to him for as long as i want (in the last case 45 minutes) and play with his feet with the dremel.  i was petting him putting him to sleep, constantly touching his nails, and he was cool with it!  when i turn it on, he kinda gets scared...but allowed me 3 times to touch for a split second different toes tonight!  BIG PROGRESS!  cody also!  he hates it, but lets me do it because he is my good dog lol.

YEAH FOR MY DOGS

Take your time and soon you'll be dremeling away! I love how gentle this tool is for trimming toe nails!
You're right-it won't be the dogs blood!  My rottie will not tolerate toe nail clippers.  The snap just
makes her nuts.  Now both her and my lab love the extra attention and treats they get for
getting their nails done now.  The secret is going really slow-one toe at a time.  Then it will
be like a day at the spa!

Good job on the progress with the dremel.

BE CAREFUL not to move too fast. You will undo all your hard work.

Keep going, keep it slow, keep it fun, and keep pushing the treats each time the dremel comes out.

Also remember, when you start touching the nails with it, it gets hot REALLY fast.

You should not do any more than 2 SHORT "bump" passes over the tip of each nail before going to the next one.

I usually "bump" the tip a couple of times, and then run it across the bottom of the nail the way it would naturaly wear off.

thanks red!  i am actually enjoying the dremel very much.  it works great....AND ANGUS FINALLY LETS ME DO IT!  i absolutely love that thingie!  the bad part about it is swallowing all the nail dust lol....it gets in my mouth and in my eyes....but oh well, its the small price to pay huh?

I hate the dust too.

ESPECIALLY in the eyes.

is everyone using corded or cordless dremels?

the cordless dremels have a weighty battery pack in the rear that may be a lil bit hard to maneuver, but the cordless have the fault of.. well, being corded...

my neighbors stole my rotary tool (generic name for dremel) recently, and i figure i should go buy another if not for the dogs, just so i can start cutting up stuff for my car project(s) again.

I've been using hubby Dremel for ages. I use the corded one. But only because thats all we have. My dogs are perfectly happy to sit still and let me do it.
Never mind the dogs, beware of the owner!!
