Just keep us in your thoughts
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:10:49 pm »
I had kept this to myself recently because there has been so much sad news, I just didn't want to give more.  But I really would love everyones positive thoughts and prayers for my son, Sam.

Friday, I took Sam to an Opthamologist to be evaluated for Strabismus (crossed eyes) and checked for Juvenile Retinoschisis.  The JR is a genetic disease that runs in my family, females carry the gene and can pass it on to male offspring.  It causes retinal detachment and, in some cases, blindness.  I found out that Sam does have JR, and that the retina in his left eye is already detached.  Tomorrow he is going to see a retina specialist and will probably be scheduled for surgery to attempt to reattach the retina.

I know this is long and winded.  Please keep my little one in your thoughts.
I am kind of a big deal!

At this point there is no cure for the disease.  They can only treat the symptoms as they occur.  My brother has it and has a prosthetic eye, and will probably lose his sight completely, eventually.
It is very rare, and so there is not a lot of awareness or studies for the disease.  What developments have been made are not yet approved for human testing/use.
I will have a better idea of what his future holds after his appt tommorrow.  At this point all I know is that he is very nearsighted and the retina in the left eye is detached.  So what little vision he does have on that side is disrupted by the visual (that he has) of the retina floating.  I am also not sure if he has periphial vision on that side, but based on my own "testing" I don't think that he does.
I will definitely keep you all updated.
Thank you guys so much for your loving support.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sam's condition.  I'm sending lots of good thoughts and vibes that the surgery goes well and is a success.  Lots of hugs as well from me and my crew to all of your family.

I'm so sorry Stacey. Having two little boys myself, I can imagine how difficult it is to see them go through something that you can't just fix yourself. As a Mom you always want to be able to make it better.  I hope all goes well, and please keep us posted.  I'll send good juju...

Well, we are back from the doctor, day one.  I am going back tomorrow morning, they want to sedate Sam so they can get a good look in his eyes with pics, etc.  Depending on what they find out, he may have surgery tomorrow as well.
Right now it seems that he has very little vision on the left side and his right eye is overcompensati ng.

Thanks for everyones prayers, keep them coming.
