This is a long story, so I apologize...
We were in contact with a breeder in South Carolina (we live in Texas) that we found on the AKC Newf Club website, met their beautiful 13 Newfs as a sidetrip during one of our vacations (most of which are there as their pets/retired showdogs), and fell in love instantly with the breed. We talked about getting one of their puppies once they start planning a litter. But before that could happen, one of their Newf girls in Texas was being given up by her family. We couldn't take her at the time since we were living in an apartment, so we (insanely) volunteered to drive her back to the breeder in South Carolina. We fell in love with her and she was instantly attached to us at the hip in the two days we spent on the road. It was sad parting with her. In a few short months, we moved into a house and got Rosie back from the breeder. We paid $500 (that's with a $500 discount because of our history with the breeder) plus the breeder's expenses to drive Rosie to Texas. If we'd gotten a puppy from her (which it's good we didn't wait since they haven't had a litter since), it would have been $2000.
