Fever experience- kids*Updated*
« on: May 02, 2007, 03:00:43 am »
I noticed my baby (1 year) felt warm last night but didn't think another thought about it since she has been acting completely normal. Well she woke up a few times crying in the night, still warm, and around 2am I took her temp and it was 100.7 rectally. I know it's low grade and all but she has NO symptoms other than that. She still feels warm this morning and is again, acting like her normal happy self. Have you guys had your kids get temps with no other symptoms? Just makes you wonder what it is. My son had that happen one time and it was totally weird. He got a temp for like 2 days and that was it, then it was gone.

This is the first fever she's ever had so it struck me as odd. My kids aren't often sick and I always worry when they are. :-\

my kids do that sometimes.  they don't get sick except every blue moon either.  i normally just leave it alone as long as they're feeling / acting fine.  i've found giving them medicine just slows them down and makes them miserable when they were fine to start with!  hope your baby feels better soon!

Okay, thanks. The whole absent symptom picture always makes me kinda nervous. I never give meds unless absolutely necessary either, I prefer to let the fever do it's job. She was at her well check 5 days ago and the office was full of sick kids, hmmm.

Well she's scarfing down her breakfast as usual so I'll just keep an eye on her.

My daughter has done that a lot!  Could your baby be teething?  My daughter gets a fever everytime she gets a loose tooth or when a new tooth comes in.

Well, I considered that but none of my kids have ever gotten warm with teeth, including her. She is teething though, she just cut 2 new ones a few days ago and is working on another.

My daughter, when she was teething would get a fever and the poos and be sooo fussy.  With Sam, he has no symptoms, just new teeth.   ;D

It is so hard not to worry about the kids though.    :-\
I am kind of a big deal!

Lexi has had that a few times too. She also gets a low grade temp with teething too and  no other symptoms. If you were at the Drs not too long ago she may be fighting off a bug she picked up there. I would keep taking her temp every half hour or so. I hope the fever goes away soon.

My kids always had fevers when teething.

Did she get any boosters?  Could it be a reaction to an immunization?

No, she didn't get any vaccines

Stupid office closed at noon. Every single time i need the dr for anything it's always been on a Wednesday when they close early, figures. I'm sure all they would tell me would be to give her some Tylenol. They can't do anything else. She's still walking around, playing, being happy and still eating so I guess it's okay. Just trying to get her to drink some cool fluids, which she isn't doing much of.

my mom (manager of the ER at home) always tells me UNLESS it's over 103 degrees, give them some medicine and keep a close eye on it.  if it's over 103 go to the ER.  hope it goes down!

My daughter ran a fever two seperate times,The first time we took her to ER and it 105.6,they were giving her tylenol and motrin to get it down,It did go down and we never found out what caused it.
It happened one other time with no explanation.
If she's acting normal it may just be teething,2 of my kids had the normal symptoms with teething but my 11 didn't really have any.

god, the ER, no thanks. ughhhhhhhhh. i still haven't given medicine because she doesn't even seem uncomfortable. i just put her down for a nap and will take it when she wakes up and go from there. i don't want it getting any higher than it is though. still no other symptoms. i know that the little ones can get pretty good fevers even with a simple cold, so i'm waiting for a runny nose or something.. ???

Please do not take this as a panic post. I don't want to be Chicken Little here...

My daughter had 2 febrile seizures, due to high (~104.5), unexplained (at the time) fevers. They came on without warning, without symptoms. One minute she was low grade, the next BAM! into full body trembling, tongue down her throat, seizure. The first time it happened I thought she was choking on food. She went limp, blue lips, and stopped breathing. Luckily I knew AR.

They transported her via ambulance to the ER, by the time we were there, she was alert, no fever and had a sore throat. She was 3 at the time, and wouldn't let Drs look in her throat. We were told Tylenol to keep the fever down. It was nerve wrecking. After seeing a walk-in clinic Dr, we were advised to use the Tylenol-Motrin method, switching back and forth between the two every 3hrs. This worked to keep the fevers down.

The second happened a month later, but this time we headed straight for ER when her fever reached 102. While waiting for the Dr, I realized I forgot my meds at home, so I asked the nurse to get her a Motrin (explaining the T/M method we were using), to which she said, ok. 15 minutes later, while still waiting, the seizure came on. This time she was seen by a ENT specialist, who said, she has an acute case of tonsilitis AND an acute ear infection. Again, no complaint of sore throat or ear.

Tonsils here (Canada) are not removed unless there are 7 documented cases in 1 year, but with the febrile seizures it went down to 4. BUT the first episode was never documented!!!  >:(

We have never had another episode of seizures, and she is now 11 (febrile seizures are most common between 6mos and 6yrs). We still use the T/M method, and are currently fighting something, with a fever of 101.4 an hour ago. She now fights most of her fevers without meds, but my cut-off point is 101.5 ... she got Tylenol tonight.

Again, this wasn't to say OMG your child will have a febrile seizure if you don't....... but to make you aware of them. I never knew of them before. I warn all my friends with children in that age range.

  • Just watch them closely with fevers.
  • Trust your instincts.
  • Tylenol and Motrin combined (alternating every 3 hrs) are the best defense to fighting stubborn fevers.
  • DO NOT cool your child down with a bath/shower or ice packs... the shock alone could cause a febrile seizure if they are prone.
  • Dress them in panties or diapers and let the room's temp cool them off.

Good luck, and keep us posted.
