List Of 75 Banned Or Restricted Breeds - Is Your Dog On The List?
The Responsible Dog Owners Of The Western States (RDOWS) has just updated the list of breeds that have been banned or restricted in the U.S.

All you dog lovers out there may just be in for a shock. BSL  - or breed-specific legislation and breed discrimination- isn't just for pitbulls or Rottweilers anymore.

The RDOWS has tracked a list of 75 breeds of dogs that have been banned or restricted - yep - that's Seventy-five. That's 75!

Just who or what is behind this breed ban frenzy?

Is your dog on the list of banned or restricted breeds?

Here's the deal.......... .....

Media Frenzy Equals Breed Bans

And just who is pouring gasoline onto the fire, whipping up the flames of pit bull hysteria?  Who or what is driving the onslaught of anti-dog legislation?

Your local paper, TV or radio station is -  by publishing, posting or airing innacurate reports than use inflammatory language ("vicious" Rottweiler, "marauding" pitbulls, etc.)

And by deliberately showing UNRELATED footage of dogfights supplied by the Humane Society of the United States.

Dog fighting is a felony in all 50 states and is a totally separate issue from dog-on-human aggression.  Yet - we have the  HSUS deliberately mixing visual imagery and video of underground dogfights with the issue of dangerous dogs or dog bite prevention  AND providing  this footage to your local TV station, Nancy Grace, etc.   The question you all need to ask is WHY????

Across the country - and indeed around the world - cities, counties and local town councils are busy banning or restricting breeds instead of punishing irresponsible behavior.

Here's what is happening:

Breed bans - an outright ban on owning a specific breed of dog
Breed-specific  sterilization  - owners are forced to spay or neuter animal
Breed-specific measures that include mandatory registration in a database similar to a sex offender database, forced microchipping, forced containment or signage
Breed-specific insurance requirements - forces owners to obtain the unobtainable "vicious" breed insurance - in reality this forces owners to surrender dogs or move
Weight or size restrictions - banning dogs over  an arbitrarily determined weight or size - as in Fairfield, Iowa where all dogs over 100 lbs are banned (St. Bernard, Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, etc.)
BTW - your insurance company is happily waiting in the background too - waiting to exclude coverage of your dog, waiting to drop your policy, or waiting to outrageously raise your rates.

List of 75 Banned or Restricted Dogs

This list of dogs that are NOT UNIFORMLY banned/restricted across the U.S.    Individual states, cities, counties or towns all make LOCAL LAWS - and those laws differ according to individual communities.

So - without further ado, courtesy of the RDOWS, here is the list of 75 - count 'em - SEVENTY FIVE - banned or restricted breeds  .............. .......

But don't take city hall's word, either.  Ask for a COPY of the local ordinance, and then ask your local city council rep if they support breed-specific laws or measures.  You can download a copy of the My Dog Votes candidate checklist HERE: Download MDV.DogFriendl yCandidateChec klist.pdf

3 Step Plan T0 Stop Breed Bans

So, dog lovers - now that you know, what are you going do do about it?

I say it's time to make the donuts.  It's time for dog lovers of every dog, every breed, shape or size to come together to stop this Dog Holocaust.

We need to stand together, pull together - for united we stand, divided we fall - And if we fall, we may see the very dogs we love disappear forever from the face of the earth.

What can just one person do - how can you help?

Here's a simple, 3-step plan to help stop breed bans and other anti-dog legislation:

1)  VOTE!

Get out in your next local or state election and vote for the dog-friendly candidate of your choice. (Hint - candidates are NOT dog-friendly if they voted for breed-specific measures) TEll your candidate that MY DOG VOTES! (That'll wake them up :-)

2) DONATE TO THE REAL HEROES!

Give your hard-earned dollars to your LOCAL shelter, your LOCAL rescue. These are the people who do the real work and they don't get a dime from the Big Four.

While you're at it, STOP DONATING to the so-called "animal protection" organizations that directly or overtly support breed bans or other BSL, like PETA, or that  covertly support BSL by deliberately misinforming and yes- scaring! the public by manipulating the media.

3)  JOIN THE VIGIL!

Send you local legislators a powerful message in a very peacefull way.  If you haven't already signed up for the 3rd Annual My Dog Votes Candlelight Vigil Against Breed Bans , here's the information below:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Join The Vigil!

To all dog lovers around the world, stand up for innocent dogs  and take a stand against breed bans and other anti-dog legislation.

We all know its Deed, Not Breed, yet our politicians continue to ban dogs instead of focusing on responsible ownership.

In 2005, over dog owners in 24 locations around the world joined the vigil.  In 2006, dog owners in 57 locations around the world joined the vigil, including 7 locations in China.

This August you can help send a very powerful message in a very peaceful way to stop the slaughter of innocent dogs.

Join the 3rd Annual My Dog Votes Worldwide Candlelight Vigil Against Breed Bans on Sunday, August 19th at 8 PM.

By taking part in this vigil which literally spans the globe, you can can tell the world to stop killing innocent dogs.

No matter wherre you live, no matter which breed or mix of dog you own, stand up for innocent dog owners

Join us to Light A Candle, Save A Life

Hey guys - this was part of an email that I got- I dont own a Mastiff but do have some Danes. But after reading the list I have decided that no I dont have Danes and Pyrenees. I have mixed breeds, Jake is really  just a chihuahua who had an unusual growth spurt and the Pyrenees are Poodles or poodle mixes. And can you even beleive that NEWFS are on this list. What ever idiot put this list together has never ever met a Newf.
Sometimes I think that some people just have nothing better to do than to come up with ridiculous stuff like this- but if the local City Councils are actually buying this garbage, then what next.

dog bann?? this is nonsense. most of the small breeds are more tempramental than the larger ones anyway!!! but that doesnt even matter. How a dog turns out is determined by how it's raised. not what it looks like. meka me mad. and if a great dane is on there then a dachshund sure as heck should be too. my mothers are more grumpy than max ever is. individual personality is what's important. so what's going to happen? maybe all these dogs would get banned. but there will still be the irresponsible dog owners out there. they will still go buy a dog...banned or not....they will still be neglectfull and turn it into a mean protective animal. even if it's a poodle. it's the people not the dogs.... kinda like it's the person that kills not the gun.....

That's insane. Glad you posted that. We've been throwing around the idea of moving somewhere else and this is very good to know. :( Guess we need to move way out in the country where those laws don't apply, ha.

Not that I'm supporting this in ANY fashion!!  But some dogs that are always on the top 10 for bites aren't even on the list!!!  This absolutely appals me, as all the breeds I love are on the list!!
God placed me on this earth to accomplish certain tasks...I'm so far behind I'll never die!!

The ban or restriction is really ridiculous. But I checked the RDOWS website, it does not have any list of dogs that were banned or restricted, just a PDF listing all the states and local legislation that has the dog ban or not. How is the list created? Another thing is there is no description if the paritular dog breed is banned or restricted.

There are also cities that have weight restrictions.  Cities in Iowa have banned any dog over 100 lbs.  Right now in Denver there is a travesty going on.  Any dog that is or looks like a pitbull is being taken from their homes and put to sleep.  The last figure that I heard was that over 1100 dogs have been put down becuase of the laws.  These laws are not slowing down and sadly are growing in popularity.
This site has some great information

The Service Dog community is very much upset by this, as this affect numerous teams.  It restricts our rights and needs.  There was the case of the Pit bull Guide Dog that was taken from his blind owner and put to sleep, while he was just visiting the city.  While my current Service Dog is not affected, I am sure it will be soon, if this is allowed to progress.  My Service Dog in training, would probably be affected. I think she is Anatolian Shepherd, and the shelter I got her from said Saint Bernard Mix, which would mean, she could be viewed as banned.  Once she is trained, she needs to be with me at all times.  These bans are putting restrictions on the Disables movement.  How can we enjoy things, other people take for granted, if our Service Dog's breed is banned? Esp, when so many teams use the most common breed for Service work, ie Labs and goldens.  The ADA, says any breed or size can be a Service Dog.  You would think the ADA would override the local laws, but in many communities it doesn't. Legally or not.

Dog bans have always been so backwards on how to deal with aggressive animals.

As we are still looking for a place around Chicago, we are being very diligent in finding exactly what the restrictions are on animal ownership and if it would affect us.  Right now we are just looking for somewhere that will allow 4 dogs (the cutoff seems to be at 3 for most towns).  From there, we will be looking into further restrictions based on breed.

You know those service dogs attacking people everyday :/  These laws are ridiculous!!!  I can't believe that they are taking service dogs out of homes...for no other reason than a breed ban.

"You know those service dogs attacking people everyday "

Just to know Service Dogs should not be attacking people.  If a Service Dog is found to do that they are to be retired immediately.  We do not tolerate such behavior in Service Dogs.  Service Dogs are required to stay completely safe in the public.  Such attacks are rare, when and if they do occur.  Service Dogs should not bark (unless alerting the disabled person to a medical condition), growl, snarl, or bite/snap when they are working.  If such a service dog is doing this, they can be removed immediately from the premises.
