Is my landseer newf normal?
« on: August 02, 2007, 01:26:44 am »
Hiya, Murphy my landseer newfie is 6mnths now but looks nothing like Jaspa my 2yr old black newfie did. Jaspa has always been really fat and really fluffy but Murphy is really long bodied with long legs and his coat isn't very fluffy at all. As this is my first landseer i just wondered if he was growing normally. When i look at photos on this site of other landseer newfs they all look really full coated and fluffy but Murphy's hair is very shoet and slightly wavy. Am i just being dumb?

I know NOTHING about Newfies...but I was actually wondering about what a Landseer was a few weeks back. From what I read...there are Landseer Newfies, that just refers to the coloring of the dog...then there are Landseers that are recognized as there own breed...I believe it said they were not as heavy as Newfies, longer legs etc... I could be wayyy off. there are others on here that know what they are talking about though. LOL

Thanx for your replies that's really helped. Your landseer newf molly looks exactly like Murphy except he's black and white so i guess that clears that up. What a relief! Thanc once again.

These are a few pics i took of him today. He's just turned 6mnths old and is almost the same height as my 2yr old newf.

Sierra is 6 months old and 23 inches tall...the breed standard states that females should be 26 inches as an adult.  So she's almost at full height.  Now keep in mind that she is my first Newf and i could be way off track.  I'm just going by what I have researched.  I have also read that Newfs reach height by 1 year and fill out after that...

By the way, Sierra looks are just like Sophie's...  if Sierra was a Landseer, I'd thimnk you stole my dog.  LOL!

And wiggi, Murphy's body type looks like it's even with Sierra's...and they are about the same age...  but remember I'm no expert.

People ask us all the time what breed Bodhi is, then exclaim "I thought Newfoundlands only came in black!!", haha.  I think he must have some Landseer in him....he is Bronze, but the fur on his haunches is almost white, and he has some white hairs on his paws.

I'm not an expert at all, but I had Lanseer years ago (I'm in Europe) and my neighbout - a black Newf. Both were PB show dogs, with nice pedigrees. My boy was taller, longer, lanky and his muzzle was much longer than Newf's - our Landsire muzzle was more Colly alike than Newf.
By body and head shape they were two completely different breeds, definitely. Coats were quite similar (except the colour), by the way.
