What could cause red jowls?
« on: August 06, 2007, 09:45:05 pm »
We picked Rosie up from the kennel yesterday. When we inspected her a little closer, we saw that the left and right side of her jowls were a bit pinkish-red and slightly swollen, like they were irritated. We figured it was from chewing her rawhide a bit too violently like she sometimes does, but her rawhide was untouched. What could be causing this? Allergies? She did eat Canidae for one meal while she was at the kennel since they ran out of her usual Royal Canin Urinary SO13. Could she be allergic to this? If it's not allergies, could it be something else?

The kennel didn't say anything about her chewing her way out of the kennel. The kennel gates are wrought iron-style gates, not the usual crate grill or chicken wire fence. So we're not certain how the redness and swolleness came about. It's still pretty red today.

The kennel has FlowCrete flooring, supposedly a non-absorbent, antibacterial floor. She does stay on the floor since she's not a fan of beds. But she didn't get red/swollen jowls last time we boarded her there. We'll definitely keep an eye on her.

Luckily the kennel has a 4-day insurance policy. In case she gets sick after her stay, they'll cover her vet bill.

My cousin has a black lab that has that happen. They concluded that it was allergies and gave her benedryl, when it occured.
