dog weight
« on: August 28, 2007, 03:24:52 pm »
I have a male Mastiff, 2yrs, & 31 inches. He was overweight and I've taken care of that. The problem is the vet and all the sites I've been to only say that male Mastiffs should weigh between 140-200 lbs. Mine was visably overweight at 172, hes down to 160. Can ANYBODY tell me what he should weigh?! ???
Thank You

Hi - and welcome! :) I'm not an expert in any way, but I believe it really has to do with the individual dog. I had one vet tell me my Bear should be about 140, another 165. He's 155 right now and, to be honest, still has a little padding around the middle (dang spare tire!).  ;) I think a good test is to feel him around the middle, both kind of on top and down around the bottom. You should be able to easily feel his ribs. Also, he should have a clear tuck at where his back legs and hips meet his mid-section. In the end, as long as you and your vet are confident that your boy is healthy, I wouldn't worry about what the books say.
