Rosie is hobbling badly
« on: September 04, 2007, 04:11:41 am »
The last couple of weeks, Rosie had been on Deramaxx for some inflammation on her right knee. We noticed no clear improvement, as she was still getting up off the floor with a weird hobble and looked like she wasn't putting as much weight on it. She was however able to walk normally after a few 'practice steps' and even bucked and ran like her usual self. Today she suffered an accident as she was rushing to get back in the house for dinner. She slipped and has since been hobbling really badly, as in not putting ANY weight on her right leg. We are so concerned. The vet called us back luckily, about the Deramaxx not working, and we told him what happened. He told us to bring her in first thing tomorrow for them to look into it, and then perhaps refer us to a specialist in Dallas. I am so worried. I know there are great Newf injury endings (go Fumble!) but it doesn't keep us from being so sad about her pain and discomfort.

Just wanted to share that I guess. I'll keep you guys posted on the vet's diagnosis.

have you tried Rimadyl at all? i know that deramaxx is "supposed" to be better, but dogs will react differently to meds, as humans do. for example, i take benadryl for my allergies and it makes me wipe clear out in a loooong sleep (i love that stuff!) but my boyfriend gets hyper and hellicunates on it. my pup showed no improvements with her HOD on deramaxx, but when we put her on rimadyl, it was a complete 360. maybe your pup just needs a different med? *hoping*  :-* sorry to hear this, keep us posted! all paws and fingers crossed here!

sometimes a bad injury can have short bouts of relief...enoug h for the dog to appear to be fine.  but don't worry until the vet gives you a reason to.  it might be nothing more than a sore leg.
let us know asap of course.

According to the vet, there are no signs of tendon rupture or tear. I guess they sedated, then examined Rosie. I was slightly concerned that they didn't go ahead and do an x-ray on her since she was already sedated and as an additional pre-cautionary measure. But I guess they know better. The vet said she may have just pulled something in her leg and worsened the inflammation, which is causing her not to put any weight on her leg. So now she was prescribed a different NSAID, Previcox, since Deramaxx obviously didn't do her any good. I'm still concerned. I would feel much more at ease if they had just x-rayed her.

Great news that there is no tear or rupture! Let's hope that new medication will do the work.

Get better Rosie  :-* :-* :-*

there's no need to do an exray unless the vet feels "Dorr motion" in the bones that the ACL is holding together.  if he feels that (the rubbing of the bones together) then he will exray the knee to confirm that the ligament is torn/ruptured.
you're lucky.  hope Rosie feels better soon.

It really is good news, although we'll be watching her closely in the next few days to see how she reacts to this new drug. She was given a steroid shot too, so that should reduce the inflammation for at least another day or two. I'm a huge worrywart, so I'll probably end up calling the vet with a Rosie update to make sure she's recovering as expected.

I'm a worrier too.  Jeff took Sierra to the vet because of her skin irritation and worms.  Nothing serious, yet I called him 3 times in an hour for updates.  Then he got aggravated and I was able to get a grip   :)

We are all pulling for Rosie here.  And we all know how much big paws can pull!  Keep us posted and give her hugs and kisses from the Steiner clan.  We're all hoping the new meds work better and she is feeling better soon.

Poor Rosie.  I hope she feels better soon.  I've been through the lameness a lot with Kaila.

I am glad to hear that if an NSAID has to be given, that you have Rosie on Previcox now.  There are so many side effects, long term liver and kidney damage from NSAIDs and Deramaxx has the highest reported issues.  I don't like the NSAID track record at all, but especially Deramaxx and Rimadyl.

The Board certified orthopedic specialists where I live say they will not prescribe Deramaxx in their center and find it too risky.  Their NSAID of choice is Previcox.

Let us know how she does....

I'm going through a big ordeal with my Pyr pup Yukon too and it certainly hasn't been fun so I empathize and hope she is better really soon. Yukon was on Deramaxx for only 3 days, it almost stopped his limp altogether but made him drink and pee like every 45 mins,so I stopped giving it-  they've given him nothing else for the pain or inflammation. :(

Yukon sends Rosie hugs :-*
