Any gardeners here?
« on: September 14, 2007, 11:26:56 am »
People, I need help with landscaping advices! Do you know any good gardening web site with advices for LARGE gardens?
So far I have found plenty of advices for something like half acre gardens and smaller, but it is not for me - I have 14+ acres to be turned into the garden and I can not afford huge mistakes, so please, if you have spotted pages with advices how to group the trees and large shrubs to create parks or something like that, please, pass them to me!
I'm sitting over the plans and my head is going around - I have baby oaks, chetnuts, maples, firtrees, different shrubs and many other things but no ideas how to put them together!

Can you consult with a landscape architect? I have been in my home now for almost 3 years and it is still a work in progress. I only have 4 1/2 acres though. I have the idea for the immediate area from the back of the house- I want bricked walkways and trees and fountains and bushes etc. Part of my property is wild and over grown with creeks and I think that we are not going to try and tame that at this time. For us it is a matter of time and money- if I had lots of both, we would have the most extraordinary landscape in the state... but I havent won the lottery yet, so again, it is still a work in progress.
I am proud of what I call the inside front yard, when I moved in, this had previously been used as pasture land for cattle, it was weeds and mud and the type of grass that is grown for straw haw. We cleared it out ourselves and brought in sod, it now resembles a golf course most of the time with the well placed trees and split rail fencing.

Thank you for advices! Parks are good idea, I will check them out as my main concern is distance between the trees. For alley along the road it is easy - 8 metres for a tree, but grouping them together is much more advanced thing to create an interesting landscape design.
I also checked the gardenwebs.com and found some suggestions that can be used in my situation, but, of course, everybody suggests calling for landscape designer.... ha, you can imagine the costs of this for 14 acres... As we just put up the new roof, and next week the old renovated door wil be put in, this is out of the question just now.
I hope, the place will be nice, probably after 20 years or so the results will be seen, and in 50 years time it may look even great :D Let's see!

Mark out the property in sections and work on one section at a time. 14 acres is way to large to landscape all at once. And if you have some issues in say section one that you dont like, then you know what to avoid in the future sections.
