Yukon FINALLY has a diagnosis
« on: September 16, 2007, 08:43:50 pm »
It's Pano, in his humerus. The surgeon seemed impressed that I guessed that's what it might be and was glad I had already done some research. I am sooooooo relieved to know once and for all what the heck the problem is. They said his left, as well as hips and knees all appear normal. He wants us to come back in 2 mos if he is still lame. Umm..I read on the notes they wrote about his physical exam that he has 'moderate to severe muscle atrophy of the right forelimb'.. is that from the Pano too? He didn't mention that.

Anyway, he said the Pano was visible on the x-rays that we brought, his bone being dense and larger than the left where you can see the inflamation.

Anyway, even if they told us it will go away on it's own, I think that was the best $95 spent to get someone that actually knew what they were doing. They were really great there.

After puking once the way there and once on the way back..he's all tuckered out now. Oh, and he gained a pound. :P

That is great news!  It's amazing how fast a specialist can get to the bottom of things.  I'm glad that you can all rest easy now and I bet that the atrophy is simply from him not using the leg normally for so long.  Our vet told me once that atrophied muscles can build right back up to a normal level once the dog uses the leg normally again, so hopefully he'll be back to normal soon.  Did they suggest any pain relievers in case he starts limping more again or did they think that the pano would calm down now?

Poor Yukon getting car sick & being barfy is no fun for dogs or for their doggy mom's either.  I bet that you are really worn out tonight!  ;)  ;D

They didn't suggest anything for pain and if it didn't seem to be so mild right now, I would have asked. If it gets bad again I will call them and ask about that because I know it is supposed to be very painful and knowing what exactly is causing it, I feel bad letting him suffer. He said most outgrow it by 10-11 months, so that's why they are giving him 2 more months (he's almost 9 mos now) for it to resolve, or they will want to examine him again and take new x-rays.

I bet that's why it seems he moves that foot so weird because of the muscle atrophy. He's been having fun with Yiska and starting to use it more for things. It's good to hear he can be as active as he wants to be now. But Yiska is getting spayed next month because well, he's a bit more active than he should be in that dept. ;) My poor girl!

Oh what great news! Big hugs to Yukon for a spedy recovery from the Pano. And he'll be able to play like a puppy again.

So glad to hear you don't have to go through surgery - it's no fun - Jack can attest to that.  Pano is really the best diagnosis you could have hoped for, that's great!  As for pain, when our vet thought Jack's limp was due to pano, she suggested 500 mg of BUFFERED Aspirin up to twice a day as needed for pain.  In addition you may want to check out the "great dane lady"'s pano feeding/supplement program at the link below.  She is a canine nutritionist and specializes in issues of large/giant breeds.  We're still using this for Jack, even though it was ED because the joint supplements are helpful for all kinds of growth issues for our large breed babies.
