Newfie skin issues
« on: October 01, 2007, 06:03:34 pm »
Has anyone heard of Newfoundlands commonly having skin issues?  Sierra is scratching to the point she starting to bald in areas and the skin is red, sore and flaky.  The vet said it was fleas but we have treated her every way we can think of and she's still scratching and has little scabs all over her.  And we cannot find one flea on her.  The vet didn't either but said she found flea dirt.  She gave us capsules that is supposed to help, but there doesn't seem to be any improvement in the last month or so.

Can anyone help?  I' hate seeing her hurt more by scratching herself raw...

There is a shampoo which you can buy from a vet office for skin problems. Lily had a bad rash ones and we were using it ones a week for 3-4 weeks and it went away. I can't come up with the name...I will PM you later  ;)

Also, put her on fish oil with vitamin E. It works great to improve skin and coat conditions.

Have you thought it might me her diet? What is she eating?

She isn't biting her feet.  The worst parts are her "underarms", her sides going down towards her belly and the back of the neck.  She chews at her tail a lot too, but I'm not seeing the redness or hair loss there.

And People Whisperer, I switched her to Canidae All Life Stages I guess about a month and half or two months ago.  It doesn't seem to have changed with the food change.  It didn't improve or get worse.

If you can see actual patches of irritation then I would HIGHLY recommend "Peace and Kindness" spray. I use it for everything...a llergy scabs, just plain irritation, hot spots. It works wonders!!!

Thank you!  I will try ANYTHING to get her some relief.

Where can I find fish oil?  Is there a certain type I should get?

There are different opinions on what kind of fish oil is the best for a dog. I think we have discussed this before. Here are the links

I just buy a human grade, non-stinky.

pm Eiren & Stacey (Fumble) They've been busy lately but have lots of experience with Bubble Boy's skin problems.

Our newf had the same symptoms that you dog has.  We found that she was allergic to eggs, in the food she was eating there was dried egg, so we switched her to a food that had whole eggs thinking there would be a difference, some bit better, but still there, so we switched her to a fish formula with no egg and now she is doing great, no itching and no hair loss.  She is only shedding like she is supposed to.  We tried the fish oil as well, it did help, but maybe there is an underlying reaction to something in the food.  We were lucky the food she had been on had the exact same ingredients, in a different order, but when we changed to the adult from the puppy there was egg in the adult formula and not in the puppy.  So it was very easy for us to find out what the allergy was.
The vet can run allergy tests to find out what she could be allergic to.  Good luck.
