HELP/ ADVICE
« on: October 29, 2007, 06:13:58 pm »
I need some serious help and advice. I adopted a 6 month old great danes on 3 days ago. The adoption agency told me that she had a leg that was 2 inches shorter than the other, she was seen by an orthopedic specialist, and that there is nothing that can be done other than supportive and comfort measures for her when it gets bad when she is older. They never specified what older ment. I told them that this wouldnt be a problem since our previous dane that died last year at 12 had bad hips in the end and we had to help him out. So I took the 4 hour drive to meet her and possibly adopt her out. Well, she is a sweetheart  of a dog and is perfect with my little girl who is only a year old. I contacted all of Roxane's vets to get her records and speak to them about her condition. Well, when I got the copy of her x-ray results, prognosis, and treatment plan I started to cry.....just as I am now while I am typing this. It stated that she has a bowing of her femur and it is two inches shorter than the right femur. ( this was at 4 months of age and she is now 6 months old) The vet told me that it will get worse as she continues to grow. Also, she has a compensatory deformity of the left tibia and a grade 3 MPL ( grade 4 is the worst) In addition she has a retained cartilghe core in the distal ulna of her left front leg. In her record it also states that she would require surgery to fix the deformities of her legs. The vet, an orthopedic specialist, told me that she needs to have surgery immediately otherwise it could be uncorrectable. Also, if surgery is not performed, she will be in so much pain that she would need to be euthanized. He estimated her surgery to be $3000-$4000. I feel like I have been ambushed by this and given false information from the adoption group. I can not and will not return her to the adoption agency as it states if I no longer want her. They had her medical file and did nothing to help her. So I will not give her back to them. I can not afford a 3000-4000 dollar surgery at this time and need any advice or help that you could give me on what I might be able to do. Any and all suggestions are welcome and sooooo greatly appreciated. I will do anything for Roxane. I applied for carecredit and was not accepted. I just dont know what to do at this point.Thank you all for any help.
