New Vet!
« on: January 01, 2008, 03:22:59 pm »
Okay, so I've gone and started to look for a new vet, if you don't remember I had some problems with my other vet being a smarty pants and telling me to get rid of Naja's Dew Claws, and really not having the time or patience to answer my questions, and getting all insulted anytime I presented her with info that she didn't know about.  So, the consultation that I have booked is for the 11th of January and it was the first vet that I called.  This is because when I metioned that Naja is a Pyr, the receptionist got all excited and said that they have several Pyr clients there!   :D.  So ladies and Gentlemen, wish me luck with this Vet and here's hoping that we don't get any more smarty pant's with no time for my questions.

Thats wonderful! I wish we had bull terrier knowledgeable vets here. We have one vet, we dont go to her because she rarely is in clinic, but she owns Danes, and so every time i see her i ask her questions about her danes, and stuff. she loves them so i dont think it bothers her.  :D Our vet we have is -in my opinion- the best in town. not only that, but darcy works for him and so we get WAY Good services. lol. Im happy for you to get a new vet who will be Pyr smart. YAY! nothing better than that.

Oh I forgot to ask, any good suggestions on things I should be asking?  I'm a big dork and forget everything I want to ask when it actually matters...lol  ::) :D

The most important thing to ask is whether she/he knows about special anesthesia needs for Great Pyrenees. If the vet doesn't have this print out ready for a file.

I have always felt that the best way to judge anybody is to simply let my dogs do it for me.  Our vet, who we had for 12 years died of lung cancer a few years back.  We decided to try out the vet who had filled in for him a few times in the past.  On our first visit, he walked into the room and promptly sat down beside me on the floor and conducted his entire exam, in the floor with me and my dogs.  I fell in love and so did our dogs.  When I had to put Chichi down, he again walked in, saw me sitting in the floor with her in my lap and sat down beside me to talk before getting all his equipment and again sitting down beside me to do it.  I love our vet and would not trade him for all the tea in China.  He takes all my calls and writes notes about everything we discuss on the phone or in person.  I can go by his office anytime and he will take the time to come out and discuss whatever it is I want to talk about.  He is fantastic!  If you don't get the feeling that your vet truly cares about you, your concerns, your pet and your pets issues, keep looking.  Okay, list of questions.  1.  If for whatever reason you have to leave your pet at their office overnight or on a weekend, what is their policy on care given and who stays with the pets and how long?  2.  What is their experience with your breed of dog, how many, how many years, etc.?  3.  What kind of pets do they personally have and why?  4.  What vacation time do they take during the year and what is their policy on having a vet fill in for them? What about emergency care at night or on weekends?  If they refer you to a different vet, what about your records.  Are they accessible by the other vet?  5.  How extensive are their resources on possible issues that they may not be familiar with?  Do they have a veterinary teaching college that they have a relationship with?  Are there specialists that they have a relationship with?  How do they brainstorm on unusual conditions and with whom?  6.  What associations or groups do they belong to?  How active are they in them?  (This would give you an idea of how often they are in the company of other vets, which is a great source of continuing education on an informal basis for any medical professional)  7.  Do they take interns or students in training into their practice?  This will tell you if there are others in the office, who are still learning the job and would probably have recent formal training including more up to date practices and information.  8.  Where do they get their info on new medications that hit the market?  Hopefully, the vet will say from colleagues, not pharmaceutical reps.  9.  How do they feel about alternative therapies and homeopathic treatments?  You may never be interested in trying something like this, but you want to know that the vet is open minded and willing to try new things and explore new ideas.  That is all I can think of at the moment.  Good luck with the new vet.

Ha!  That's quite the list!  I hope you don't mind but I'm going to copy, paste and print that one off to take with me!  All very good questions too, I knew that I could count on my BPO advisors to help me come up with questions I never would have thought of myself!  Thanks Kathy.  :D

Okay, so the appointment isn't for another 2 weeks, so there's still lots of time to gather info that I want the vet to look at, and think of more questions to ask.  I actually hope he doesn't charge too much for this as I'm waiting for my next payday to do it in the first place.  I don't think he should though, it's just booked as a consultation, not an actual appointment.  But I am bringing Naja to make sure she likes him.  Hmmm, I guess we'll find out.  ::) :)

Okay, so as some of you remember I had a consultation with a new vet last Saturday.  Sorry I didn't update right away, it slipped my mind with everything going on this week.   ;)

Anyways, the vet was okay.  Yup just okay, not overly wonderful, I don't have any fantastic stories to tell about him, he didn't sit down on the floor with me or have an instant connection with Naja.  But he wasn't bad either, he was patient, understanding, took his time to answer all of my questions (I was so nervous I think I might have read a few of Kathy's questions verbatum!  I just copy and pasted it!  lol), he has about 20 years of dealing Great Pyrenees patients, and he seemed to have an overall concern for animals.  He does donate some of his time, equipment and money to the SPCA, and is in constant contact with the various Vetrinary schools.  He takes interns every 2 years or so, and his wife is also a vet.  Another thing that I liked is that he asked me almost as many questions as I asked him.

So I think I will make him my new vet.  I didn't get the fireworks I was hoping for, but I did get a $54 bill.    ::) :P :D

She seemed to like him, she wasn't overly excited, usually when she meets new people she's pretty nervous for a minute or 2, but she was quite calm, although I'm sure him slipping her the occasional cookie didn't hurt either!  ::) :D
