Help!! How do I get his nail to stop bleeding??
« on: January 22, 2008, 03:00:08 pm »
I feel terrible and have never done this before, but when I was trimming Tipper's nails I got too close to one and he is now bleeding. I can't seem to get it to stop. I have a makeshift bandage on him now that he will be able to get off of himself in less than 30 seconds. Is there something I can do for this? Thanks!

You can put flour or cornstarch on it...

Ditto on the flour or cornstarch. When Bubba ripped out his rear dewclaw I put him in a down stay and applied pressure and kept packing it with flour. It took about 10 minutes but it did finally stop bleeding.

Just let him outside to walk around in the dirt.  When he calms down the bleeding will stop.

If the other remidies do not work there is a poweder (normally yellow) that you can buy at any pet store that will clot the bleeding ASAP. It is found in the grooming supplies. In a pinch (I know this because I have used it) a steptic pencil works too.

my vet suggested Styptic powder also...not the stick, but the powder.  you should be able to find it in the men's shaving section.  Home remedies are flour which works better than corn starch.
